Huh. [He wouldn't know - but he smiles as well, nonetheless.] So y'didn't spend it on nothin' or give it t'people? Is there somethin' you'd really wanna get with that kind a' money? [Oh, hey, he didn't actually ramble too badly this time around.]

Well, I was gambling, and made it that way. Lost it the same way next hand, too. So if there is anything I'd spend it on, ain't never had it long enough to find out.

Aw man. But, that's still cool that y'won that much. I ain't into the whole gamblin' thing. Y'always see on tv an' movies all them people on slot machines lookin' like zombies, an' guys at tables losin' a lot a' money. It's real risky.

Oh. [And that shuts him up... for all of five seconds.] Y'know what I miss? Doc; Doc Louis. He's m'trainer from back home, a former heavyweight champ from the fifties. He's the best trainer a guy could have. A nice guy, real dedicated. He's sure as hell tough, but that's the way y'get better, y'know?

Yeah... [He peters off - but briefly, absently chewing on his lip as he gazes down at his feet. ] He's... I... sometimes I ain't sure where I'd be without 'im. I ain't sure if... iunno... [Rubbing the back of his head, he lets out a breath that almost sounds like a weak chuckle.] ...ain't sure if I'd still be around, y'know? [While he manages a closed smile that could almost pass as being sincere, he looks everywhere but at Jason for a long moment.]

It's jus'... I don' wanna... [He shrugs a little.] Hold you up or nothin' if y'got some place t'go. [Well, it's partly true, at least. He inevitably begins to ramble a little.] If you do wanna go somewhere, I mean.

Uh... right. Okay.

Well... about Doc... he'd drop in the local gym a lot an' check everybody out. I started goin' there 'round thirteen, fourteen, an' it was real somethin' seein' him around. He said a couple things t'me, but we ain't ever really talked 'til, iunno, 'bout half a year or somethin'? It seemed like whenever I was lookin' his way, he was always lookin' at the other guys. I was real sure he was gonna wanna train one a' them instead a' me.

My swing... [He repeats, thoughtfully.] Yeah. M'real lucky - iunno what I woulda done if he'd a' gone with somebody else. Jus' keep tryin', I guess... but I feel like I talked t' hundreds a' trainers before 'im an' nobody wanted t'give me a shot.

Me, Sugar? Oh, used to do work like putting in roads and uilding walls and that kind of thing. Africa, Asia, those kinds of places. More recently, tend a bar back almost home in the US.
