Summary: IT'S A SUMMER PARTY

It's cold out there today, isn't it? Sure, it's not snowing but once you get into the Battle Dome, it'll be comfortably warmer. Warmer, not warm. Follow the tiny paper arrows and you'll probably find yourself in, well...summer!

It certainly looks convincing enough (a pool, a volleyball court, deck chairs, everything that you'd think you'd find at a pool party) and feels convincing enough (take off that coat! Aren't you hot?) so why not not step in? The barbecue's sizzling and there's some nice cold drinks at the cooler.

C'mon in, the water's awesome!

Sheik told me a little about them. So you can heal, Link? That's a wonderful ability.

[And it makes her just a little less worried about the lack of fairies in this world, too.]>/small>

[He smiles, genuinely pleased, his voice soft.] Uh huh. I learnt because of him, actually - he came back from being captured by the Malnosso, and I felt really helpless. And I didn't want to, so I learnt how to heal. And -

[He pauses a little there, then simply glosses over the truth.] And I've practised it a lot.

I will learn some as well. I already know a little healing and some barriers. I don't want to hold you back too much.

[She just smiles. The pause gives away that he's leaving something out, but heavens knows she'd had enough awkward conversations since arriving here. No need to push it.]

Really? Then I bet it'll be really easy for you to learn from Nala! And I bet you'd be really good at Light magic.

Probably so! Those both sound like they would be compatible with Nayru.

[Zelda looks curious suddenly.]

Can you still use the light arrows here?

[A nod.] The Fire and Ice arrows, too - and the spells I learnt from the Great Fairies. But there's something called a power cap here, so I can't do as many as I did in Hyrule.

[Almost absently, he raises a hand to his chest.] Have you heard of Nayru's Love? It's saved my life before.

[Zelda nods, clasping her hands.]

It was one of the first things Impa taught me while we were running. I didn't like that I could only use it on myself, though, so I tried to learn more general barriers on my own. There wasn't as much time as I would have liked.

I'm glad you know it. It's really useful. [He gives her a quick smile.] What about Din's Fire or Farore's Wind?

I do not think so. Farore's Wind sounds familiar, though. We didn't get to that before the spell to create Sheik was complete.

[And even though it had effectively taken years from her life, she was glad that they did complete that particular spell.]

[That... actually gives him a moment of pause, and he glances around to see if anyone's listening before leaning in, dropping his voice.]

What - was that spell? I mean, Sheik isn't a disguise or anything - he's a person. He has his own mind and thoughts and everything.

[Zelda thinks back to that day, looking distant. Her voice is quiet too, and she's almost speaking right into Link's ear.]

Impa said that it was the spirit of a former Sheikah. He was wiped clean in order to contain me... it was in the fall, at a time when the threshold between our world and the spirit world was already weak.

[She pulls away.]

I didn't realize until after the spell was in place what would happen to him if I woke up. I don't think Impa wanted me to feel guilty about it.

[Link exhales. The spirit of a former Sheikah...] Then... he used to exist. Maybe that's why he's here - he's still the Sheik we know, but he's also the original one.

I hope it's something like that. I truly hope his condition is stable. I have to be able to go back to Hyrule, but I'm afraid of what might happen to him if I leave. I don't... want to sleep forever, but if he's going to disappear if I don't, I wouldn't mind sleeping until we could figure out something better.

That's kind of why I don't want to go back to Hyrule. [He says it quietly.] The last thing I remember is beating Ganon - but the last thing he remembers is teaching me the Nocturne. If I go back, I'll never see him again - and if he goes back, he'll disappear really soon.

[He smiles weakly.] At least if we're all here - then we can put it off. Right?

[Zelda closes her eyes and smiles gently, resting a hand on one of Link's.]

I am glad that you're here for him. I... I can't be, not forever. So the fact that you wish to stay... I will miss you terribly, but I'm happy that he won't be alone.

[His expression turns sad, then. Distant.]

I don't know if we can be. It might send one of us or both of us back tomorrow, for all we know. I want to stay - but I don't know if we can.

[Uncertainly, he glances up at her.] I wish there was a proper way for the people who want to go home to be able to go, and for the people who want to stay to be able to stay, but to be able to visit all my friends where ever they are.

We will make it so, someday. Those that run this place will not keep us in the dark forever. I know that a few years seems like a long time, but if we persevere, there will be answers.

[Her smile widens.]

How could there not be? Just look at all those gathered here. So many talented, amazing people.

[His smile brightens a little.] Right! I've been here for almost two years, I can wait some more.

[He pauses a little, then huffs a laugh.] It's weird. In Hyrule, we looked like we were the same age. Now I'm older than you.

You don't look that much older than me!

[She laughs, too.]

I'm 17. I'll be 18, soon. Well? Were you the same?

Pretty close! I turned eighteen a few weeks after I woke up.

[Paaaause.] Or I guess it would have been eleven, normally... but here, I'll be twenty in April.

[...Why does twenty sound so much older than nineteen?]

[Wow, two decades old... that does sound kind of old. But she's glad that he doesn't seem so out of place in his adult body anymore.]

You've grown so much. You actually seem to fit your body, now.

[He smiles a little sheepishly.] I don't really feel like a kid in an adult's body any more, I feel... sort of like an adult, I guess. I've missed a lot, though. [He sounds more curious about the whole idea, really, not mournful.]

[He gives her a sideways glance.] But you slept too.

[She looks a little sad thinking about her own childhood.]

I did, but I think that being a member of the nobility forces you to grow up faster than average. And I did not sleep for seven years, it took two for us to perfect the spell. So I suppose that we're about the same age, really.

I guess that makes sense. I don't... feel a whole lot older than you. Or that much younger.

[Sudden giggling.]

Age seems to be difficult to quantify, anyway. Sheik seems older than both of us, but we're twice his age!
