"O-oh. Slow down, James. The oh dear Gods aren't supposed to come until later. Y'know, behind closed doors."

Oh. Toying with the Admiral. This could be fun. "You do know that, right? Or is there no special someone in your life?"

"Indeed.

Well, if you would only accompany me we could close all the doors your heart desired."

He and Willow could lock her in a room until they found a way to rid her of this delusion -- or else until it broke down naturally.

[herotypical]

She flattened the unpistoled palm against the hollow of her throat. Surprised.

"James. I never considered for a moment that you might be interested. What with all those...buttons. On your uniform. Which is missing today, I see."

[abidinglaw]

He did not understand -- and he did not have to.

"You may not know that you are Buffy Summers, but believing yourself Annie will not serve to relinquish you from your birthright. You alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. Pirate or valley girl, it makes little difference."

[herotypical]

Well, now she was growing ever so suddenly cheesed off. Why? Well -- it was that one word.

"No. You don't get it. Me? I don't have a birthright."

[abidinglaw]

"And here I thought you'd jump on 'valley girl'."

[herotypical]

"Well. I wasn't born in a valley, if that's what you're implying. At least -- I don't think I was."

[abidinglaw]

"Spell beginning to falter, is it? It's about time."

[herotypical]

Not at all. It's just -- Annie Summers never knew her birth parents. Who knew where she could have been born; it was anyone's guess.

"Shut it."

[abidinglaw]

He showed his palms as if to say -- shut what? And shook his head in pity.

"I do hope your bite is worse than your bark."

[herotypical]

"Much, actually. Just ask your dearly beloved housemate. I nearly shot him, this morning."

[abidinglaw]

"Well then you did not shoot him, did you?"

The watcher saw little danger in goading her this way. He did not have a room-mate.

[herotypical]

"...I did last time."

[abidinglaw]

James' eyes narrowed. There were no to ways about it - if he was going to prove to Annie that she still had the instincts of a slayer then he would have to get that gun away from her first. Before that, though, he'd better know who to check up on as soon as he was finished here.

"Little wonder you dared not try his sword arm."

Did the man in question carry a sword? Maybe, maybe not, but how else was he going to find out? And what better way to make a pirate babble than to insinuate cowardice?

[herotypical]

"Please. Pistols? Swords? Cocktail toothpicks? I can best Sparrow with the lot of them. You know this."

[abidinglaw]

"Jack Sparrow?"

The urge to rush off and check up on the man who ran afoul of the slayer died right there and then.

"I doubt it. Perhaps you should go -- waggle your sword at him a bit. Just to make sure."

[herotypical]

"...I'm through waggling anything at him."

[abidinglaw]

That moment of vulnerability garnered a moment's sympathy from the watcher. He narrowed his eyes and turned his head to stare off into the distance.

"What if I'm right? What if you are a slayer, and not a pirate?"

[herotypical]

"Then the world's turned on its head and I've worked hard at a reputation that's worth nothing."

A sad sad notion.

[abidinglaw]

"It is worth everything. The strength that you have been granted has enabled you to wrench your world from the very brink of destruction - repeatedly. You are kind-hearted, if often sour, and selfless if perhaps a little irritating in your --... fixations."

He may have misunderstood her, here. He may have gotten things backwards.
