And now we got the guy here. [He flips his mask in his hands. Reminiscing.] And the Uchiha kid that attacked the Kage conference. Together. What a treat.

[Rubbing the bridge of his nose.]

... so how far out of it do I sound so far?

You speak differently. [The honorifics, instead of the usual 'mister', though he'd been dropping that with him more lately.] And it's... strange to hear you speak of things my comrades and I have tried to keep close to the vest.

[He wonders if that will be a blessing or a curse later.]

You're just more ninja-like than usual, I suppose. [So far, it's one of the smaller changes.]

So I was ninja-like before?

[He sounds faintly pleased about that. Maybe he and Trafalgar aren't two totally different people. That when this experiment ends, he doesn't completely die.

But he still dies. A switch is flicked and he ceases to exist. He never really existed to begin with. He is a fabrication. Without matter. Without purpose.

He thought he was prepared to die. A death, no matter how it occurs, as long as it is in service to the village, isn't pointless. He took solace in that. But this...

It is difficult.]

I imagine you'll want to talk to me or rather... him later. If this is anything like Luceti Valley, the memories of this lifetime will remain reasonably sharp for a while.

I don't really forget. I have a feeling Trafalgar won't either.

[He nods to that: an oddly ninja-like pirate.]

[He thinks on that. Puts down the mask. And reaches into a pouch and withdraws a photograph and hands it over to Shikamaru.

Of a little girl. Barely older than one. Clutching a toy shuriken in her hand. Wearing simple practical clothes with a clan emblem on the back of her shirt (Araki... if Shikamaru even recognizes it.)

She has silky hair. More delicate, feminine features . But her coloring and the sharp intelligence in her eyes and the slant of her eyebrows.

It's all Law.]

My daughter.

[What is even worse is she's not real. Training tells him to sever this instant any attachment to her - she is a illusion, and genjutsu are dangerous enough without muddying things further with sentiment.

But blood calls to blood, and though he is a shinobi first, he is also a father. And he wants his daughter to live. Or at least be remembered.

Even as a face from a crumpled photograph.

Because it means in some form, some way, she did exist, if only for a while.]

[The round face could only be that of a child - he can tell that much before it's even in his hands. He takes it gingerly, with great care.

A lie. A figment of the imagination, conjured up by the Malnosso for this man.

A little girl. The King.

Not Konoha's King, at least. But still a strong piece for her country's future one day, had she been real. She is for now, so he'll pretend, the tip of his pinky tapping against the crest. Involved in politics more than his friends as he sometimes is, yes, we can say it's familiar even if he knows no specifics.]

How old?

[It looks as if it's seen a lot of handling - it was probably dated even before Law came here, though maybe not by long.]

Two now. She celebrated her second birthday about two weeks before I was taken.

[There is a kind of. Wistful regret. there. He would have loved to be there. Celebrate it with her. Especially since her mother wouldn't be there to share it with her.

But the hunt came first. His duty came first. She would understand when she was older, the sacrifices a shinobi had to make and hopefully not begrudge him for it too much.]

She's a good-looking child. Though I gotta say I'm surprised you settled down.

[He's about the right age, really. It's better to have children young when you're a ninja. But there's been a growing trend to postponing it in all the nations lately. Harder to do your job when you have a kid.]

Isn't she? Takes after her mother that way.

[He laughs.] Oh, oh dear. Don't tell me my other self is some sort of lady-killer now.

[He doesn't want to get into the more unpleasant bits of clan life and the necessities of maintaining a shinobi population, though as a member and heir of a noble clan he should understand how this goes. Even though Konoha has enjoyed much more peaceful times than Kiri. Not had their population decimated like Kiri's through constant war and bad village practices. There may be a growing trend, yes, but Kiri was the place were it was taking place the most slowly.

Marriage in a powerful Kiri clan goes like this: The heir of the clan keeps the name, and marries not only for power and good breeding, but also status. A shinobi bride or groom from another prominent clan usually was the only thing considered acceptable. The next ones in line had a little more freedom, but they tended to marry within other clans as well. The youngest and the branch houses, even more so. The clanless were acceptable as long as they proved worthy and would help give rise to new strong shinobi for the clan. The gene pool needed to be diversified in the old houses, and therefore the marriages were crafted and often arranged for maximum benefit.

Let him think it was a love marriage, though, if he thinks that. Lightly:]

[He laughs a little at that. 'Lady-killer'. He really hopes not - he has enough of those sort of friends in his life.]

I get you. Gotta make way for the next generation, and whatnot.

[Oh don't worry. So not a lady-killer. So not a flirt. When there is someone, he generally is discreet.]

... yeah. The future will be bright for them. Things are changing.

[There's something satisfied and relieved in that, before the mood gets more pensive.]

You know I haven't seen her in months. I've been on the hunt for Kisame Hoshigaki. I know she's being well looked after, but, well...

[Oh, that would be a long term job. Kiri would probably be more dedicated to going after their own than Konoha was with the Akatsuki as a whole. And as a (former) member of the Niju Shotai, he can say the Land of Fire wasn't exactly slacking on that.]

And then this place happened.

[You must miss her a lot. For a photo that could only be a year (or two, with Luceti) old, it has seen a lot of handling.]
