[ Cloud never was a SOLDIER either... but it's a fact that's touchy enough that, for better or worse, Lightning's not going to correct the misunderstanding for now. Even she can't say for sure whether they ever really got along here in Luceti, but Hojo really managed to fuck that guy up. And that's not something everyone needs to find out about when he's not around. ]

Deserter's the technical term.

[ "Shoot on sight until incapacitated and drag back if she survives" is probably the more accurate one for her in particular. "Wanted dead or blown to bits" might work for the men.

Needless to say, Lightning's voice has dropped to a bitter mumble. The irony is that she came here to get her mind off having to insist that what she remembers as her past isn't a lie... and now she's having to talk about it and doesn't want to. ]

Seems like I've been running into a lot of those of late.

[Cloud, Zack, even Cid might be considered one. He even had contacts in Shinra that had been sympathetic to his cause. Another SOLDIER deserter isn't that surprising. Especially after the rumors he heard happening some years ago.]

As for me, I guess you could say I'm running with AVALANCHE these days, if you've heard of it. Not my personal preference, but we share common interests.

[ Lightning knows of AVALANCHE alright... though she hasn't really heard what she assumes he must actually be referencing called that much. Her lips press into a weird frown as she tries to wrap her head around the fact that this guy is talking about things from her world... and yet somehow she knows almost nothing about him despite living with Aerith and Zack for over a year and a half. It takes her a few beats to work out what to say. ]

You mean with Barret?

[ ... She's abruptly aware that somehow she doesn't know that particular guy's last name. ]

[Goroh frowned. He never liked Barret. A hotheaded idiot who made more trouble than he helped. There'd been times that Goroh had been tempted to shut down AVALANCHE himself. Funny to think he was working with him now.]

Among others. That kid, Cloud Strife- he's the one in charge these days. He might not look like much, but they're doing good now.

And Aerith?

[ Flower girl's never mentioned Gruffy here being with them before... although of course, what if he joined up with them after she-- well. Lightning's demeanor is very careful. Just like she was with the mention of Cloud's SOLDIER status, she doesn't want to say too much. ]

[He shouldn't be surprised she knows Aerith. He just wonders why Aerith never mentioned whoever this is in turn. Suspicious.]

Nice kid, not too bright though. Has a penchant for trying to get herself killed. [He says it lightly. No big deal. After all, she has Goroh here to save her bacon.]

[ Aerith and Lightning had only met as kids before they got to Luceti, so... that at least is easy enough to explain...

Unlike that comment, which cues Lightning just. Staring in disbelief. Does he know, then? If so, is it possible to be so tactless? Not just because of her death pre-Luceti, but also because Luceti itself hasn't exactly been very kind, either.

She wasn't offended before, but now? ]
