I mean -- yes. Yes, Shift. Not aye. No ayes here."

"Annie? 'M sorry."

Palms on display -- she stepped back. She hated when he hit his knees. And Buffy had done so much worse to him, she believed. Things that went beyond petty jealousies and Shift-induced smooching. A couple Valentine's Days and Luceti Valley had done them worse.
It was all the stuff about Teague that she felt most awful for. Teague and Jack's mother -- and there was still guilt sitting on her shoulders for that one. The Code.
"It's not like I didn't...I mean -- hmm." Well.

"You...didn't...?"

Don't blame her."

And again, with Albert. God, but the Shifts liked to shove the pair of them together.
Once he was on his feet again, she could look him in the eye. Cool and -- frankly -- a little upset. "Shut it, Jack. When've I ever blamed...?"
She'd taken Jilly into her house. Gone leagues towards reconciling with Raine. "Not that kinda person, thanks."

Better just to trust, at this point. Why pick at a sore spot?
Jack scratched at the scar on his wrist, then took her wrist in his fingers and gently clapped her open palm against the side of his face.
There. Better.

It didn't have to be said and yet she wanted it said, anyway. She was too tired to be jealous or possessive or even vaguely upset. What did she have to feel threatened about? Other than all those past-proposals and a now very wide-eyed view into Jack's past...
Oh. On that subject: "One more question, though."
no subject
"Aye?"

Where was the line between reality and fiction? "I don't remember much..."

She danced around anything too specific -- prostitutes and dirty dealings and murky doings. Saying them aloud might just make them truer than she wanted them to be. And as he'd said on the Pearl, he was a different man now.

He'd grinned at his own execution over the litany of crimes, wincing only when the justice forgot the "captain" in front of his name. He'd been willing to sell one hundred men into one hundred years of punishment to save his own skin. He'd very nearly damned his own ship and crew through his cowardice.
"Aye. True."
How much would that change? He nervously scratched at his chest, just above Blackbeard's mark.

And here.

Time to be a big girl and get this off her chest. There was no use leaving secrets shackled to her heart -- not after this mess. Not after she'd taken all those proposals in (considerable) stride and now this, too.
no subject
And odd. Tremendously odd.
"It...no?"

"The Code. Jilly has the key. You told me. And -- well, it wasn't tough to talk her into...and -- now that I kinda have a first-hand notion of what your father's like, I kinda wish I'd never touched it."
Page one hundred and twelve. She didn't have to say it. Her pointed line of questioning two weeks ago would be enough to dig her hole for her.

You didn't speak of it. The pages had been so gummed together with time and neglect and not speaking of it that he wondered if they'd had to tear them to read it properly. Oh, God. A new fear that was ancient in his breast sprung up. Had they torn it?! Was it whole and sound?! Teague would have all their heads.
No -- no -- Teague would have HIS head. Specially. He'd wear it on his belt as an example for those who shunned the Code. Who tore it. Worse than hot coals. Worse than eels, even.
And now Buffy knew. How long ago had they trespassed? How long had they known what he was, where he'd come from?
