[Edward pauses mid-step, glancing briefly at Ling to take in the change- dressed normally, no weird armor, no sign of confusion or unfamiliarity. Good to know. Wordlessly - at first, anyway - he withdraws his hand from his pocket, showing off the automail before moving to approach the Xingese prince.]

Looks like you're the same as ever.

[Noted. Given Ed was in his usual kind of clothing, he didn't expect much different anyway.]

It would seem so. Though I have to admit, I think I'll miss that armor.

You like that kind of stuff?

[It had all looked so... clunky. Not stylish at all 8|]

You should have seen the 'jet skates' in the boots. I could stand still and get around town. No walking required.

...Should've figured you'd say something like that. [Oh well, that's Ling for you. May as well just shrug it off.] Where'd you end up, anyway? Before that experiment started. Did you go home?

[Head shake.] I was sent to another world with someone called Rock. Before then, we hadn't even met. His world was highly advanced. It's where that armor came from.

...That's weird. I was thinking that whoever got dragged along would end up as a part of the visited world, but your was the opposite of mine. I wonder why.

[It doesn't make much sense. Although the rest of the experiment seemed completely randomized, so maybe it just happened this way by chance?]

Seems the pattern isn't so predictable, then. Does that mean you went back to Amestris?

[Which would mean... the Promised Day, he belatedly realizes.]

Yeah. [He pauses, glancing away briefly, then smiles and returns his gaze to Ling. They had some losses, and some really terrible battles. But they won. They got what they wanted. He knows it for real now.] Saw it through to the end.

[avaricious]

[For his part, Ling can't smile about it too much. He's serious, even if he doesn't look away.]

Then you know what was sacrificed for that victory.

[And there goes the smile; he nods instead. Even with the Philosopher's Stone and his future secure, Ling had less to smile about that day, didn't he.]

...I'm sorry. About Fu and Greed, I mean.

[He'd known about the latter, but... Fu's death had been a shock. A lot of good people had died because of that damned conspiracy.]

It's in the past for me. [He's quiet, looking away.] It's still in Ran Fan's future, though. It must tear her apart inside, knowing what's waiting for her.

...She knows? [A beat.] You told her?

[That... explains a lot.]

I kept it a secret from her for months. I didn't want to burden her with that knowledge.

[But. There comes a point where you can't keep lying. He can't hide his feelings from Ran Fan and Fu. They know him too well.]

...I won't say anything. [Really, it's an unnecessary promise- he wouldn't have said anything regardless. It wasn't his business before, and it isn't now. Still, it had to be said.]

If she finds out where you went, you won't be able to keep it much of a secret. [Not that he doesn't appreciate the offer.]

She doesn't have to know, then. [He shrugs.] It's not like I need to tell her everything that happens.

[They're not dating or anything. ....Anymore.]

What you tell Ran Fan is between you and her. [She's trying to find her own way right now. So. He won't be protecting her. She's supposed to be his bodyguard, after all. Nothing more.]

Did something happen with you guys?

[It's more than just her... well. Lack of being here.]

[... is he even going to tell Ed about it? How does he even spin it into no big deal?]

There's not much to say. Right now Ran Fan is engaging in extra training.

She was just wandering around the village when I saw her. What kind of training is it, a nature walk?

[It's... vaguely playful. But there's some underlying tension here that's getting him worried. Ran Fan was pretty clearly not okay.]

{Wow Ed you are incredibly not funny and Ling is not amused.]

Training doesn't have to take place at all hours.
