Carefully -- so carefully -- Jack climbed in beside her, so afraid to hurt her further. "Hope. Since the start. You." And it hadn't been the whole slayer package, either. It had been just her. Just Buffy Summers.

"Just you."

She wasn't able to nuzzle near or wrap up in his arms. She was barely able to lean leftwards and touch her cheek to his shoulder. But some contact was necessary after the cool parting on the prior day and for how absent she'd been during the rescue attempt.

She took his hand in hers and frowned to see blood still under her fingernails. His, she thought. Or hers. Who could tell?

Hope. It was so antithetical to how she most often saw herself, still. "I don't know what to say..."

His lips just brushed the top of her head. "Long as there's life? There's hope. And for you an' me, it goes beyond those bounds."

It was a nice thought. She tried to espouse it. It was the sort of thing she could tell someone else and believe it wholeheartedly as she did but today? Today felt so far from hope.

"Just like a Hallmark card."

Just like a whatnow?

"Dunno about this Hallmark fellow. Sleep now? I'll look after you."

"I'm not tired," she lied.

"I want to bring you home when we get back. Don't want to have to bring you to the clinic. Sleep.

Another gentle kiss against her hair.

But the dreams. She didn't want to risk their return. It was bad enough reviewing her mistakes in her conscious mind. Her unconscious was even crueller.

Jack kissed her again. It was hard not to.

Buffy tilted her head back against the pillow. She wanted to refuse sleep, but she was tired. Not too tired to lay down some serious criticism, though: "People don't have gills. Not usually."

"That's the rhyming bit. With 'ills,' you see." Very lightly he touched the side of her neck; there was an ugly bruise there. "Used to get me here with it."

[herotypical]

Although she didn't flinch, there was a certain tightening in her shoulders. "And I'm sure you deserved it every time. 'Cause he hardly ever got me."

"I did.



Still my best mate." He removed his hand and changed tactics to a soft, rusty lullabye:

"Pirate ships, pirate ships, child; merry and bold, sparkling and rich, child..."

Humouring him, she closed her eyes. Even that was only managed with accompanying pain. Buffy hadn't even been bedridden for a day and she was positively fed up with it. No patience for weakness.

"....Not working, is it."

[herotypical]

"...What if I go back there?"

Didn't matter that there were no Shifters here. She was clinging to her consciousness, now that she had it. Complete oblivion was also preferable; however, it was that dangerous middle ground that she feared.

"....What if you come into mine? My dreams?"

[herotypical]

"It's not exactly something I know for sure how to control, just...

Well. Being in an almost-coma has helped. In the past. I -- No. There could be bleed-through and..."

And she wasn't prepared to share the things swirling most avidly in her head. It needed to be safer. More secure.

"I'm not ready."

"Then do what I do when it's a troubled night: think of the Pearl."

"I've only seen her once." And that might as well have been a dream, too. "And I never even got to peek inside your cabin. You know that?"

[all7seas]

"Criminal." The pirate brushed a tangle of hair from her temple. There was blood in it. "Because I could have kept you very well entertained there."

"...No thanks." Because, God? How much more entertaining had he done there? And that, after having learned about the other proposals. No. The fighting top had been much better. Unique.

"How's this, then? You sleep. You hold my hand. And if you need me, you squeeze."

"You're dead set on this, aren't you? Me sleeping."
