Oh...of course. [Spock is reluctant to put Arsene down, but compensates for it by taking Arsene's hand in his once he's settled. The connection allows for easier communication... and he was sure they were friends, so it should be accepted behaviour...right? Well, it was comforting either way, and Spock didn't want to dwell on it or his inner turmoil will make it across the link.]

[Spock addresses the machine with the female voice...]

Who or what are you?

I'm GLaDOS. A genetic lifeform and disk operating system. At least that's what it says on the card. The acronym matches, so for now I'm going with that. [ Matches the name branded on the side of one of her panels, she means. ] I'm also probably the one in charge of this building. Which means I get to clean up messes made by people like you two.

Out of curiosity, if I can't get this open again, will one of you kill the other for sustenance? You might want to start thinking about that now. Not for any particular reason, of course. Just something to consider while I work.

[Lupin frowned at GLaDOS' suggestion in disbelief, his bemusement and utter rejection reflected in his eyes and in the stiffening of his stance as he angled a glare up at her. He would have spat a few colorful curses had he a voice at the moment; instead he reached under his jacket for--

What? His instincts said that he should have been carrying something at his shoulder, right underneath the loose fitting jacket that he just felt comfortable wearing. Lupin looked at his empty hand, perplexed.]

[His voice (or lack thereof) betrayed him, but the emotion behind the fruitless action was clear. Discrepancies were starting to become apparent, and he wasn't sure that he liked them.]

[Spock looks at Arsene and squeezes his hand.... he glares back up at the machine.]

I suppose that depends. I don't feel particularly hostile at the moment. Just annoyed that I have to be stuck here cleaning up other people's messes. I'm sure I could be, though, so you probably don't want to try pushing me.

I don't plan on keeping you in here just to find out the answer to my question, by the way. Being trapped in a building with just the two of you sounds like it would boring very quickly, and even I can't entertain myself with you for infinite stretches of time.

Out of curiosity, what did you do to this thing? I've never seen these error codes before.

[Lupin smirked at her insistence, not sure what to think of it. She didn't sound overtly hostile, but she still didn't sound trustworthy.

He scratched out a note and held it up for her to read.]

we were trying to get information about this village. historical and scientific data so we can find out what happened and how to reverse it.

I probably could have helped with that. At least, I would have known how to undo this mess. But I supposed we've already established that.

[Lupin nodded at GLaDOS in understanding, but never dropped his firm stance under her oddly judgemental gaze. It must have been her tone of voice--oddly bored and sarcastic through the electronic filters, but it wasn't a deterrent for him.

[Spock finds comfort in Arsene's support and faces Glados once again.]

We were merely looking for information that might explain our current condition. [Spock briefly looks at his PADD which he accidentally left hooked up to the mainframe and hopes that Glados does not notice it before he can get to it.]
The bypass codes I used were simple in nature....the complexity was merely in the amount of layering that was involved.

I...uh....apologise for any.....inconvenience? [Spock moves them slightly to the right, away from the door and a little closer to the console.]

I suppose that's at least a little bit helpful. We'll see what I can do.

Did you happen to learn anything useful? Or am I just doing all this thanks to a useless effort? I won't be upset... just very, very disappointed.

[Lupin looked at her squarely and nodded--there was no way for him to adequately communicate the little they had found out about Shifts and the Malnosso without the use of his voice. It was too complicated.]

[Spock looked at Arsene and then back at Glados... looks like he might need to interpret.

Spock answers Glados while inching closer to the console, trying not to attract attention...]

We came across some information the implies a society-wide event called a 'Shift'... and that the faction behind it may or may not be called the Malnosso... Do you know about any of this?

[Spock communicates through the link...]I don't think I trust this machine... and I need to get my PADD back. Something tells me that she should not get a hold of it....

[ There's several second's delay before she responds. ]

Oh. This is very interesting. "Shift" appears in the documentation multiple times. "Malnosso" does not. I suppose you just need to know where to look. Well. Not that this really gives much information, but apparently some of the technology that makes this building work is the same that caused this event. If your information is correct, anyway.

I don't trust her either, but we are gambling. You're not supposed to trust anything in a gamble.

We'll see what we can do about your tech.

[Meanwhile he nodded in acknowledgement to the commentary, all the while wondering if it was possible to reverse it...]

[Spock gives a mental acknowledgment of Arsene's suggestion... and addresses Glados once more.]

Perhaps if you allowed us access to the console we could attempt at undoing what has been done?

And allow you to make this even worse? You really shouldn't push your luck. You're fortunate that I managed to take control before the whole system shut down. The last thing I need is you two... doing what you appear to do best.

That's screwing things up, by the way. In case it wasn't clear.

Give us a little credit. None of us have memories and we were able to get in. With guidance we should be able to fix it.

[Spock looks around and does not see any other possible exit.... and he is not sure of the machine's ability at the moment to allow them to leave peaceably... But Spock knew that he could get them out of here if he had further access to the computer....]

Unless your "alternate means" involve destruction of the consoles, go right ahead. I won't stop you at all. Really, do you think I'm such a terrible person that I'm trying to keep you in here? If I were, you two certainly wouldn't be just standing there.

It's much easier to break something than fix it. So if you two want to try breaking your way out, that might actually be productive. Meanwhile, I'll be over here. Fixing this. Because someone intelligent has to clean up your messes.

I can think of something...

[That grin was too confident as he stared at her for another tense moment before he broke contact and set about investigating the door. It was of a technological level that his instincts were unfamiliar with, but he suspected that some elements were always the same.

Every door had a means of opening, right?]

[Spock's eyes follow Arsene to see him start working the door...well, at least he seemed confident. And they were in-tuned enough with each other for him to intervene when the time came.

Spock sets his sights to the other consoles in the room. Of course they were all connected somehow to the mainframe... it was just a matter of getting into them without the use of his PADD...which is sitting innocently beside Glados...

Spock walks across the room to some mechanical panels and sets about removing them. It is indeed fortuitous that he's found out how strong he was... though he was going to have to replace some door-knobs when he returns home.

Spock is presented with a lot of wiring, lights and switches... fascinating. He starts to rummage and separate until he finds what he is looking fo...yes! There it is! Spock pulls a plug and...........

They are all completely plunged into darkness. The electricity has been disconnected, hopefully that is enough to power down Glados for the time being.]

[ It probably would have been, but the Malnosso in their infinite (?) wisdom (??) don't have her hooked up to the Battle Dome for power. ]

... Alright. To your credit, I suppose I wasn't expecting this place to be so poorly designed that you'd be able to shutdown all power from over there. But to my credit, I did say to not destroy the consoles. And turning them off is a very thorough, if impermanent, destruction. So you might want to fix that. Right now.

[Lupin's hands guided him in the sudden black out even as GLaDOS issued her warning. He found a space where there was an airflow--and therefor an opening. His notepad, still handy, was shoved underneath the metal barrier in an attempt to wedge it open.

Keep talking, GLaDOS. Lupin may have found a means of escape.]

[Fascinating... it seems he could see fairly well in the dark... He felt like he knew that though. No matter...

Spock took advantage of the darkness to steal around the consoles quietly and get a hold of his PADD. He kept moving to the other side of the room, closer to Arsene...

Hopefully most of this went unnoticed by Glados... he still did not know his opinion of the machine...and it seemed to assume everyone, and everything, was dumb. Spock ducked behind another set of consoles and plugged in his PADD once more.... he put the red emergency lights back on and attempted to undo the security measures. An idle thought went through Spock's head as he started madly typing code on to the device....]

Arsene....I hope you're finding an alternate means for us to get out...
