It's funny -- [ she hazards ] -- how there are some tiny, quiet ways that being here instead of home is a godsend. Maybe they're not always dealbreakers, but they make a difference. I'd think that dodging those headaches was one of them.

[She gets an uplifted brow at that.]

What, remember how they felt? It's like an old wound, the memory's faded over time. I just know that they hurt.

[ she speaks suddenly and her sincerity surprises herself, but -- somehow -- she simply hates the idea of him being in pain. it knits her brow and makes her frown. ] I mean -- I'm just trying to say that...

I wish it didn't have to. Hurt. You.

[dissonates]

[....Huh.

He's quiet for a moment at that, glancing over at her, then impulsively sets a hand on her shoulder, hoping to reassure. He doesn't fret about it, so why should she? Even though it's very kind of her to worry.]

It doesn't anymore. Forget it, alright?

[ funny how a single touch can be so damn reassuring. she smiles. ]

Forget what? [ she jokes -- simple and sweet and tractable in how she immediately behaves as though there was nothing to forget in the first place. ]

[dissonates]

[Pfft. Cute. He even cracks a smile.]

[ smiling causes a funny little feedback loop. he smiles? she smiles. and she nearly has to bury that smile in her drink when she starts to wonder when her cheeks will crack. ]

I like this -- [ she eventually blurts. ] Whatever's come over you? I like it.

[dissonates]

[Huh... also unexpected. He lifts a brow at her, though he doesn't look particularly bothered by her comment, either.]

It's called honesty, if you're curious.

Well? Honesty becomes you, Asch. You wear it like a designer jacket.

[dissonates]

[Pfft. So she likes honesty, huh...?]

Well. If there's anything else you wanted to know about me, I guess now would be a good time to ask.

[herotypical]

[ god. it's like open season on all the nagging questions she's ever ever had. but the mere fact that he's offered impresses her so deeply. how kind; how courteous; how chivalrous, indeed, that he should invite her curiousity so plainly. ]

...Do you have any family? [ family's important to her, after all. ] I mean -- can someone who's like you have family, y'know?

[ she hopes so. ]

[dissonates]

["Someone like you", she says... he looks momentarily affronted, eyes narrowing, but it fades before long, and he opts to shrug it off, recognizing it for what it is- he'd just admitted to being a strange kind of being, really, so it's logic. Still hurtful, but he can forgive her for it this time. Or at least, he feels compelled to, anyway.]

...I used to. I was born like anyone else, and I had parents. But nothing lasts forever.

[ she turns her head and taps her cheek. after all, she did say slap me if i'm misunderstanding. ]

[A bit of his anger fizzles at that, though he still looks irritated as he turns away.]

[ her arms drop back to the bar's surface, crossing casually. ]
