Clove looks up, looks right at him. She's expecting him to be kidding or to chime in with something chiding. But... he actually means it. And that's something she's not used to. Not here.

"I think you're just about the only person around here who thinks like that."

Her voice is quiet, softer than she's usually given to speaking. It has an uncertainty to it she usually tries to hide. After all, with everyone questioning what she is and what she does here, she has to stand firm and defend it. With someone accepting it, she has room to ask questions of herself.

"I'm trying to learn something new. Not... Not to replace fighting. I do like it. But just... something for when I'm not. When I'm not fighting, I mean. It's not going too well, but... I'm trying."

He laughs good-naturedly at her incredulity. It is a little unusual to want to push young people into battle, but he recognizes bits of his culture in her. If she had been born a man and into a samurai class, war would have been expected of her and balking at it would have been seen as a sign of weakness. "I've often been told that."

"It's good though, to have something besides battle to do. When war is all you know, peace can make you restless - and reckless." He moves the katana off his lap to his side and rests his hand upon its sheath, watching her with a smile. "May I ask what you are trying to learn?"
shenevermisses: (Concern)

[personal profile] shenevermisses 2013-04-11 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Clove smiles a little, but it's a sheepish expression. Sure, he's figured it out, but it's something she hasn't even admitted to Cato yet. Because it's foreign to her. This and wanting to do it and anything but battle...

"Where I'm from, if you don't go to the Games, you get trained for a job, and you work that job your whole life. You... don't really have time for much else. I mean, a little, but not a lot." Because it's important to know that, important to understand, she thinks.

"But if you win the Games, you don't have to work. You have enough money to do whatever you want. So, you're supposed to pick up a skill. Something outside of combat that you do... for fun."

Her smile becomes a little more uneasy, and she ducks her head just a little. "I'm trying to learn to carve."

I've been on drafts and missions before, yeah, and I was trained to fight and kill before I came here.

[He whistles slightly--kind of impressed, but at the same time, he's a little surprised.]

Wow, that's pretty intense.

You get used to it.

[Too used to it, maybe.]

The good thing is that no one asset is better than the others. Or that's what I've found in my many forays into these drafts. I think you should do as much as you can and that's all that matters.

Law gives a pointed look at the guards, and then picks up his clipboard and begins to write.

"Count Zompano had many enemies. Some more obvious than others... but understandably not a very popular fellow with a lot of the Organization. At least that's how I know it. Before he went missing, he leaked a number of secrets about key Organisation personnel and the General into the enclosure with secrets about the inhabitants. The Commandant, CJ, Specialist Davis, that blonde you speak with, John, someone named Jacob, and yourself. Some of it was obviously lies... some of it... well. Who knows."

The pen pauses.

"I imagine you are aware of who was at the Keep then." Or are you, he wonders. On one hand, why ask if he had no idea of Luceti's presence in the first place. On the other, well, that was a good way to tease out information if he had no clue and only a suspicion.

It is a good place to pause, regardless.

[It's not the sort of conversation Clementine believes. She's caused problems to a lot of people back home because she couldn't stop pretending that things could be okay again. She has no intention of making that mistake again.

But Buffy is very obviously looking for a different answer. So instead of arguing, Clementine just goes quiet and nods, letting Buffy tell her things that aren't true.

Grownups lie sometimes. It's something Clementine understands.]

[...

The Chief notices this might need some intervention in order to aid him. She crouches to him, one hand remaining high as an offer. Sadly, she seems to have an idea how to help him get the cure.]

It's going to be necessary for your welfare out there, sir.

Considering everything that's happened? I'm not sure I want to read more into it. Horner's a sleaze with a capital-s. In some weird way, that exonerates him -- y'know? Because there is no way in this hell or any other that he's trying to, I dunno, ingratiate himself with me. I don't think he's the type to chase reluctant women. Too much effort; not enough payout.

It's a little like here. Well -- not here-here. But back in the village. Plenty of folk I miss, from back home. I've been away for so long that it's hard not to miss them at some point or another. But they have places where they are, and I wouldn't with Luceti on them. Not ever.

[ ah. now this part was indeed a lie. ]

Buffy winced. God, all this portal madness. She wondered now if she should have stepped in, then. Earlier. Made her criticisms more well-known to more than just Tony. Would it have mattered? Would they have done it anyway? Probably. The Slayer's opinion on strategy wasn't what it used to be, not in this world of heroes. Not when I died in a portal hardly stood up against the far-flung science of others.

"Ground zero. I seem to recall that position being exceptionally unpleasant."

So he doesn't know you were close. Or, at least, how close?

[Natasha moves with the line, her expression serious.] It is easy for things to get... complicated, in that case.
rightfootforward: (so nice to see you)

[personal profile] rightfootforward 2013-04-11 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
In my time, there weren't a lot of anyones in the organization. [Save for Americans and the stray British soldier like herself. She returns Natasha's handshake.]

And yes, I was. British Royal Military Intelligence Division and Liaison to the SSR for the duration of its run. I hope we can indeed see more of each other. It's good to see that strong women are still on the lines as they should be.

So she was learning something in case she won the Games - even though she knew she wouldn't. Being here was as good as winning, though, on an intellectual level. She didn't need to work and there was no money. Everything she needed was provided, save for peace of mind.

Souji watched her shift through her emotions, her thoughts evident on her face to someone as experienced at watching people as he was. He let her parse out what she wants to say and only smiles when she admits to her hobby.

"It's quite useful - and while difficult, can yield beautiful results. In my culture, artisans are highly valued." Next to warriors, that is. "Perhaps you could show me some day? I'll show you my hobby, if you'd like."

Loki shrugged. "I've had worse. I wasn't in the portal either." For a moment he wasn't so much looking at Buffy as through her. "Thigh for a brief time, I effectively was the portal."

In hindsight, he still didn't know quite why he had done that. No one had thanked him for it, and it had proven very unpleasant. Likely no one knew, or if they did he doubted they would care. He'd wanted to see Jane and Tony safely back. Him, of all people. He shouldn't have cared, but he'd wanted something salvaged after every other one of his hopes had been summarily destroyed.

Little good it had done.

It's grown a bit since then. [Natasha's lips quirk faintly.] And there are several women high in the ranks in SHIELD these days. The Director's current second is a woman. Agent Maria Hill.

[There was also another of note that she didn't bring up. Just because Natasha was a little wary about spilling too many of the future's secrets.]

[Thank goodness one of them can lie, and Diamond's fast to agree with just nodding. The chef looks between them, poking Diamond in the stomach briefly.

"This young, huh? It figures they're sending me these greens instead of the ones I asked for... Go, we're on a tight schedule and with you two being late we're even further!"]

Y-Yes sir, thank you sir. [He's only nervous because of the jab, really.]
