This post covers the first day, before the attack. Remember, characters here are not expecting an attack and are under the impression they will be going to Region 1 to fight. During this day, draftees will be restricted to T6 and T7 and not permitted access to other areas.

It's just a lot of squares to take in. Is there an easy way to figure them out?

[Every time he tries a number, it's already taken up somewhere or it's not in the right spot. That's all.]

Ahaha. Some find it helpful to write the possible numbers down in each cell of contention. If a certain possibility doesn't contradict any of the other numbers in that row of column, then it must be the correct choice.

Okay! Do you think I could make a blanket out of one of these? [As in, one the size of a blanket. A huge puzzle.]

I don't see why not. But a word of warning: you'd best keep it out of my sight, or else one day you might find the answers all penciled in.

Huh? [... oh.] Oh, I meant one the size of a blanket! Though a blanket puzzle sounds cool too.

That's... a very large puzzle. But there's nothing wrong with ambition, I suppose.

[Yeah. Something to give to Missy and Pearl. They could work on it together~.]

I don't really know if I could make one that size... But I kind of want to, so Pearl and Missy can work on it together. Do you think it's possible? How many numbers would I need? [He'd probably need help HAHA....]

It would be possible, I'm sure, but it would require a great deal of numbers indeed. [Going into the double digits... or maybe even triple digits? How feasible would this be...]

If it's a collaborative challenge you're looking for, perhaps a very large maze could be another idea.

Just an idea. You've done mazes on paper before, yes? They can only be so difficult. But when you make one as large as a bedspread...

[He nods down at the pages in Diamond's hands.] But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Before you can decide on giant mazes or squares, you'll have to solve the ones right in front of you.

[He looks down in minor disappointed, but that sharpens up to determination and he nods.]

Got it. Just try one number at a time until it's the right one, right? I can do that! [Yeah, let's solve puzzles!]

[Right! He'll just be using the strategy suggested to him, going slow so he doesn't miss one. He's a steady worker and it's fun.]

[Darn tootin' it's fun. As they plod on with their puzzles, Layton becomes increasingly drawn into his puzzling, bending over his notepad in concentration. Sudoku, man. Sudoku.]

[Oh man, you're really going at it Professor. Diamond pauses in his finishing to watch Layton.]

[The arrangement seems sound as is, but if he removes this cell and knocks it down to 20 givens, the difficulty would ramp up by quite a bit. But deleting it might make this clue over here overly ambiguous. Maybe it would be better to take away this cell over here instead...? 1, 3, 7, 8... No, that won't do either. 2, 4, 5, 7... 1 or 3 or 8, 1 or 6 or 9, 3 or 6 or 8 or 9... The top and bottom rows are no help, but the adjacent columns perhaps...]
