What: The Cultural Fair
When: June 5th- 12th - admittedly dates are sort of nebulous - set up could have begun as early as the 5th, but given the event recently, more days could have been taken to do it and for people to involve themselves, so it probably "officially" starts a little later (by the 8th at the very least, though work can go on throughout it) - feel free to use your judgement/have fun!

Notes: Booths can be labeled as separate comments! Just put [booth name] or something in the subject line so people can find top level comments easier.

Work probably started for it on the 5th-7/8th for labor purposes, though feel free to use dates to your advantage here! (Even if characters slapdash something at the last minute, it would be fun to see! It would even be encouraged after the crazy from the last event - kind of a way to get back in touch with themselves.)

CHARACTERS ARE WELCOME TO TAG THE LOG FOR INTERACTING WITH OTHERS, NOT JUST BOOTHS, SO FEEL FREE TO TAG IN! Also a character who might not know what's going on is welcome to walk by and question it! And so forth. (Helios and Ikki made posts in regard to it and there have been art club posters around, so anyone could have noticed those as well!)

I'll leave descriptions up to you all as there isn't much that is too uniform about the displays, as everyone is encouraged to be creative about their presentations and how hard the characters worked isn't something I could define for each of you. Just keep in mind that this takes place in the plaza, there shouldn't be an issue with blocking traffic (there may be ropes up to try and keep pathways clear, however!), though it may branch around various points of the square depending on where someone wants a booth located / the number of actual participants. The square will also have a lot of brightly colored signs and decorations indicating what is going on!

For ideas/reference on how it was handled last time, feel free to look through here! There's no official signup, so go forth!

[So, this? Definitely impressive. Zatanna’s had a demonstration of water bending before, but seeing fire manipulated like that is pretty new for her. Even a really skilled magician would be hard pressed to have this level of control, and what she’s seeing isn’t magic. So that level of precision with an element that’s unstable and wild definitely gets her attention.

What’s more, she recognizes the guy responsible, although it’s a little hard to believe it’s the same person. So when Zuko takes a break, Zatanna heads over. “Gotta say, that was a lot smoother than the first time I saw you.”

[Zuko is wiping his face off with a towel when she approaches. At her statement, he gives her a sheepish smile.]

Yeah, well. I've had a little more time to get used to things.

...Not a lot, but you know.

Yeah, I’ve got an idea. [And it’s a good thing to see. Calling their first talk awkward is probably being nice about it.] I’m guessing this is something you’ve been practicing for a while, though. You were really good.

Since I was a kid. ...Thanks.

[She hasn't seen his sister, or any others who firebend just to perform, either. For the sake of his ego, that's a good thing.]

I'm kind of a prince, so it's important to be able to work properly with the element of our nation.

A prince? Funny. You don’t really strike me as royalty. [But Zatanna’s notion of the ruling class pretty much falls into stereotype land and she knows it. So she focuses on what she does understand: legacy and dedication.]

But I get it. I’m a second-generation magician, so I’ve been practicing something all my life too.

You just haven't seen me in my robes with my hair done up.

[He won't let that bother him. He knows he can be a bit of a mess when not in the palace.]

But you're a magician? Really? Like with hat tricks and stuff?

Yeah? Well, now I’m curious to see what you look like all cleaned up. [It’s not like she minds a mess, though.]

You've got it: with hat tricks and stuff. Want to see? [Of course, it’s pretty obvious that Zatanna doesn’t have a hat. But from the way she’s grinning, that apparently won’t be a problem.]

Sure!

[Magicians were really only seen at festivals in the Fire Nation, and the bigger performances all involved grand firebending displays, which he'd always been more interested in. He's not familiar with many parlor tricks to begin with.

He has noticed that she doesn't have a hat, but as a magician perhaps she can make one appear.]

Okay. Just make sure you hold on to that towel.

[For this Zatanna skips the illusions and the stage tricks, opting to go straight for the real deal. So she gestures to the towel when she mentions it, a natural enough move, although the words she speaks next might appear to be anything but.]

Lewot nrut otni a tah!

[It's the power of transformation, and the towel lifts and warps whether Zuko holds on or lets it fall. Within a few seconds the material changes, from terrycloth to manipulated gossamer, the towel transforms into a black top hat.]

[Hardly bothered by the loss of the towel, Zuko stares in wonder at the transformation. Is that a hat? It is, isn't it? Not the sort of hat he really sees in the Fire Nation, but a hat all the same.

He claps at the performance, honestly impressed.]

Wow! Is that real, or is it just a trick o make it look like a hat?

You tell me. [Zatanna tugs it gently out of his hand, then sets it on top of Zuko's head. It's definitely real, Zatanna's spell causing transformation instead of illusion, and she grins as she lets him take it in.]

Does it feel real?

Whoa, it does!

[He pokes at the brim.]

...It's not going to dump something else onto my head now, is it?

Hmm. [Well now that Zuko's brought it up, that could be a concern, couldn't it? Zatanna pauses for dramatic affect, looking very much like she's contemplating the question.]

I think you're safe. Could be hard to say. Do things often fall onto your head from random places?

[Zuko's eyes dart up toward the hat as if he'd be able to see anything pouring out of it.]

Not... normally, no.

[Perhaps he should pull it off his head before that happens...]

And yet, you seem strangely terrified of it happening.

[She can't help but laugh a little at the wary look he's giving her. Honestly, it makes it pretty tempting to turn the hat into something else, like maybe a bird, but instead she opts to give him a break.

Mostly.]

Trever! [A reversal, and a moment later, the towel flops down over Zuko's face.]

Mmph!

[Zuko flails a bit before pulling the towel from his head and giving her a wry look.]

Well I'd never seen that sort of magic trick before.

[Don't mind Zatanna. She's just laughing at Zuko's flail.]

It's not actually a trick. It's real magic. The manipulation of the state of matter to create a desired effect through sorcery. It's kind of like what you do with fire, if I'm understanding bending right.

Uh... right. [Her explanation went right over his head, but he'll go with it.]

I've just never heard of people bending, well, stuff before.

Well, we don't actually call it that. It's just the best way I have of explaining it without getting technical. [Because she could; using magic responsibly requires understanding how it affects the world. As much as she throws it around, Zatanna still has great respect for what sorcery does.]

If it makes you feel better, not everyone can do it in my world either. Most people don't even realize that magic is real.

Most people in my world don't consider magic to be real either, even with bending.

[He stares at the towel now in his hands.]

Is it just a towel again? It won't turn back?

Well, bending isn't magic. At least not according to how it works in my world.

[Zatanna can't sense it as magic, which is enough for her to say it isn't.]

Afraid not. If you want a top hat, you'll have to go shopping.

No, that's okay. I think I'm perfectly fine with it staying a towel. Thanks.

Can you do a lot with that? With magic?

[It's a strange thing to ask.]

If you’ve got the power and the training. I mean, there’s a lot of things I can’t do, but other people here can. And I know some really basic fire manipulation, but nothing like what you can do. My dad might have been able to come close, though. Plus he could do things like make a floating disc to fly on and shoot lightning.

Maybe you can show me a few other tricks... or spells, or whatever they're called... at some point.

[He kind of wishes he could see how the magic her father knows compares to some of the firebending he's familiar with.]

Sure. I never mind putting on a show. [Provided the person asks nicely, anyway.] And in this case they’re spells. Tricks are more like stage magic and sleight of hand stuff, although I can do those too.
