Luceti Valley - The First Log

Summary: Luceti has become an idyllic and peaceful 50s-esque village. The first few days are just business as usual, right?

August 1st had seemed like an ordinary day in Luceti. But late in the evening, for those night owls who had not turned in yet, they were witness to strange fluctuations in the barrier. Beautiful, really, almost like Luceti had received its own 'Northern Lights', even though it seemed to come from the far east, across the ocean. This ominous light show lasted for all of fifteen minutes before it ceased all together. Skimming the ocean waters, a horde of cultists entered Luceti, cloaked by darkness. Upon reaching the entrance to the tunnels, their leader stepped inside and was followed one by one by his fellow cultists. When the last had entered, the tunnel entrance closed. Across the mountains, the entrance to the tunnels in the village did the same.

Midnight passed without incident, but by three in the morning, the change suddenly came. Minds were altered, forms were changed, and buildings sprang from nowhere.

Much later, on August 2nd, morning settled on a changed village, the new mayor made his way to his mansion with his pair of adorable dobermans at either side of him. The sun shined bright. It was a good day to be a Lucetian.

Note: There will be a stand alone log for the homecoming dance. There will be another log for the second stage of the event.

[ Rapunzel Curtiss, upper-class high school senior, fashionable yet sweet, is having a wonderful week. Everything is going exactly the way she wants it to, and her peers are buzzing with anticipation about the upcoming Homecoming dance. At school, Rapunzel flits through the hallways between classes and clubs, stopping to say hello and chat with those she knows and handing out flyers for the Art Club to those she doesn’t. She’s simply alight with excitement. The day before the Homecoming dance, Rapunzel will be helping set up decorations and tables in the gym.

After school, Rapunzel can be found at the Soda Pop Bakery, dressed in a pink knee-length dress with a white apron and rollerskates and serving all manner of treats and drinks. She even gets to try her hand at some baking behind the counter - as it turns out, she’s quite good!

Rapunzel also stops by the public library most days after work, picking out some new books to read before always making sure to be home by dinner time. Family was the most important thing, after all!

Though, of course, she never tells her father the real reason why she’s leaving in the evenings, which is to spend some quality time with her boyfriend, Asch. It was for his own good, really. Rapunzel knew how he would react, and as long as her mother knew, there was no harm in it.

Besides, things were really falling into place for her. And there was no such thing as too much of a good thing, right? ]

Action - school, handing out flyers

[Watch out, Rapunzel. Here comes the weird girl, the one who always sits alone in lunch and always makes odd comments to the teachers - and other students, for that matter. She never seems to bother with being polite and fitting in, which is downright unsettling at times. At least she's not working class. She's a (borderline) acceptable person to talk to, from a solidly middle-class home instead. If you like her brands of sarcasm and dry humor.

She is also decidedly not interested in Homecoming, and she sighs as she realizes Rapunzel is handing out flyers and she can't escape the awkwardness of either being given one, or pointedly not given one since everyone knows Daria Morgendorffer never joins clubs or activities anyway.]

Look, I don't need a flyer. I couldn't draw my way out of a paper bag with a pair of scissors to help me.

[degleamed]

[ Ah, Daria. Rapunzel recognizes her, and even knowing her reputation regarding extracurriculars. It's always worth a shot, in her opinion! She smiles brightly, still holding the flyer out. ]

That's alright! We accept members of all artistic skill, and making friends is half the fun!

[Do you see friends hanging around her locker, Rapunzel?]

Right. The throngs of admirers I'll gain by shoddy attempts to make paper dolls.

[If she had talent, it might be different.]

[degleamed]

Not admirers, friends! You really should consider it. Everyone there is very sweet!

[ Rapunzel knew how some students were prone to tease and bully, but not her Art Clubbers. They were upstanding individuals. ]

[One or two of the people she can actually stand are probably members. So it's not that she thinks the Art Club is bad; but it's not particularly for her.]

I'm not really the club type, either.

[dadlyinstinct]

[Lee will stop down by the gym once school hours wind down, being one of the volunteer chaperons to the dance and agreeing to help out with supervising decorations. He can't stay for more than an hour, having to go and pick up Clementine from school, but he does take note of Rapunzel's enthusiasm.]

Need any help Rapunzel?

[degleamed]

Oh, hello, Mr. Everett! [ Always polite, Rapunzel hops down from the stool she's standing on to hang a banner to properly greet him. ]

I think we're pretty well covered on decorations, but would you mind helping me get the chairs set up?

[dadlyinstinct]

No problem. [Chairs is probably the best route for him and he'd rather encourage the kids to do most of the work. It is their dance after all.] Six per table sound good?

[degleamed]

That sounds great. Just enough to encourage socializing, but not too many to create a crowd.

[ Even chair-setting had a science to it. ]

[dadlyinstinct]

You've really thought this through huh. [Shrug, whatever. Teenagers aren't much different from his day really.] Excited for the big night?

day 1

[imatreenow]

[Guess who else is working at the bakery today? This guy. Even though he's there all the time, he has never been much of a presence in the shop, quietly keeping to the back area as much as possible. He has this habit of looking like he would rather start chewing his own hand off when confronted by a customer. Of course, he unwinds when working alongside his father or siblings, but he has yet to warm up to any of his other co-workers.

This afternoon, he's meticulously rolling out a wad of sugar cookie dough - a box of assorted cookie cutters perches on the table beside him.]

[degleamed]

[ Rapunzel has been paying quite a bit of attention to Mithos as they started to work together more frequently. He wasn't particularly social, but she was determined to befriend him, anyway. He just seemed like the type who needed a friend, and one more person to talk to at work was always nice, wasn't it?

So she sets down a bowl intended for mixing a brownie batter on the table next to him. ]

How are the cookies coming, Mithos?

[imatreenow]

[He had expected her to bustle right past him, so when she sets the mixing bowl down so close by, his shoulders jump a little in surprise.]

...Fine. [He doesn't look up from his rolling, which - aside from the slight hiccup before - has continued without change. He's wishing that he didn't have to keep his hair neatly tied back when he works, because a curtain to hide behind would be nice now.]

[degleamed]

[ Oh, dear - did she startle him? Rapunzel's smile turns a bit apologetic. ]

I'm sure they're going to come out wonderfully.

[imatreenow]

[His response is blunt, edged with quiet annoyance:] I'm following the recipe. [You know, the same one that's always been used. So of course they're going to come out just fine.]

Day 1 (Day 2 would be saturday, derp. Sorry!)

[Rapunzel was one of those people Mavis found herself watching from a far during her time in High School. She was sweet and out going and friendly, pretty much everything about her seemed imbued in sunshine while Mavis watched from the shadows. Mavis isn't bitter about it but there is a certain level of longing or envy for that kind of lightness of spirit, not only that but Rapunzel had a brilliant artistic flare which Mavis couldn't help but admire; which is why her usual glance up from her corner turns into a curious stare at the art club flyers.]

[degleamed]

[ Rapunzel's sights were trained to find the less obvious students - those were the ones she wanted in her club. The ones who could use the friends more than the art. She's noticed this girl before, but to her dismay, she still hasn't learned her name. Well? Now was the time to change that.

Rapunzel breezes over to where Mavis is standing the corner, art club flyer outstretched towards her. ] Hello! Are you interested in joining the art club?

[sweetfang]

[For a second Mavis blinks and casts a quick glance over her shoulder to see if maybe Rapunzel is talking to someone behind her but nope! It's just her, and after a moment more of flustered silence she tucks her hair behind her ear before accepting the flyer.]

Hi...I didn't know there was an art club.

[degleamed]

[ She didn't know! Which meant she hadn't made up her mind not to join, yet. Rapunzel had a chance to recruit her. ]

There is! We meet every month and make lots of neat things - including friends! [ She chuckles. It's her favorite line. ]

[sweetfang]

[Friends huh? That's...a little hit or miss depending on who else is a member. Frowning thoughtfully she gives the flyer another look over, mentally weighing her options and the pros and cons of giving it at try. But once a month didn't sound too bad and she could afford to spend one night late at school without impacting her volunteer work or her responsibilities at home.]

What sort of things do you make? And who else is in the club?

[ She feels like an alien, an outcast, unaffected by this Shift. From what she can recognize it's... a transgression of time, back into the 50s — possibly the 60s. As she has also overheard, their personal history was changed to alter their mindset into believing that they had been born in Luceti and lived there all their lives.

Marita isn't so eager to let herself be known, especially because of the rumors surfacing that there were people who were going against their ideals and those who did were to be sent to the asylum. Questions, she supposes, would surface another time, but all there is to do now is observe. So, she's at a safer place: the library, keeping a cautious eye on everyone she comes into contact with.

As she thumbs through the titles of the books, hoping to find something that will alleviate her paranoia, she runs into a young girl. One, of course, who seems to be affected by the Shift. Marita looks to her for a moment, not quite wonder if she should address her or not. It's not as if her own clothing fits into the world of... whatever this is.

The most she can do is smile and at least try to fit in. ]

Are you looking for anything specific?

[ Rapunzel smiles easily back, entirely too consumed with how well things are going for her to do anything less. She heaves her current stack of books onto a nearby table - she isn't done looking yet. ]

Do you have any mystery novels you'd recommend? I'm in the mood for one today.

My first choice for recommending anything related to mystery is always Nancy Drew. [ And she figures it is not too out of the realm of what this girl looks like she would enjoy. ] Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca is another, although it has a bit more... gothic romanticism tied to it. Still an excellent mystery though.

I've read a few Nancy Drews before, but I haven't read Rebecca! What's it about?
