No, no--[he waves her away, almost irritably. Afraid to touch her.] Fine. You're all broken, Annie; mind your arm.

[ she offers him an impatient look. ] One arm doesn't mean I'm all broken.

[ but she backs off. suit yourself. ]

[I WILL thank you very much.]

[ there are other things she wants to say. kinder things. they're harder to bring to the surface and so she settles for matching his pace rather than setting it.

there's a stand of trees up ahead and this portion of the field really is relatively unpopulated. perhaps they could sit, there. ]

[Jack is not thinking about Buffy, surprisingly. Jack is thinking "One foot in front of the other and then rum. And then rum, then rum. Trees. And then rum. And sitting. And rum." That is what he is thinking. Just that. Everything else is too much.]

[herotypical]

[ it isn't long before they get there, although it probably feels like forever. buffy plants her scythe blade-down in the ground. ]

[Jack flops. Removes his hat. Leans his head back against a tree, teeth gritted and eyes closed. Just for a minute.]

[herotypical]

[ buffy kneels, holding onto her broken arm like some fragile package. ]

[all7seas]

[Right. Enough lolling, Sparrow.

Jack rouses himself and reaches into an inner pocket of his coat. The locket is there, just over his heart, and with it a small packet of healing herbs ground into a powder: for pain, and quicker mending.]

Do you have water, An---Come here. By me, if you please.

[herotypical]

[ she walks forward on her knees until she is at least within reach. ]

No water. [ it isn't the kind of thing she things to take along. hell, she has no supplies on her beyond those weapons and now she's only down to the scythe. ] But there's gotta be some findable water around here...

Nevermind that. [Sparrow reaches into another pocket and pulls out his flask. It is full, luckily, but he wants her to have Raine's medicine. This is his. He hands her the packet of powder.]

Put that in your mouth, savvy? Then have a swallow of this.

[herotypical]

[ she licks her lips, considering the powder. she knows the arm will heal up in time. ] Is this all you have?

[ because she is not going to take all jack has just to humour him. ]

[Wordlessly he hands her the flask. Just take it.

Really, his motives are practical, in a way; of the two of them, she will be the most good should they be attacked again. She needs to be in top form.

Also there's the fact that he would do anything for her. Adoringly.]

[herotypical]

[ she has a bit of an internal struggle before cracking open the packet of herbs and tossing them onto her tongue. a grimace. that's foul but not quite as foul as what follows as she takes the flask from him and floods her taste-buds with what she knew wouldn't be water but still hadn't expected the strong taste. she never does.

buffy coughs and hands the flask back, pulling a face of considerable disgust. ] Ugh.

[He takes it back with a half-smile and takes a much longer sip. It doesn't do much to dull the pain but it is comforting in other ways.]

Working yet?

[Impatient. Jack might look like he doesn't care that much but it's the only thing he wants to know, now.]

[herotypical]

Sure.

[ only magic works so fast and buffy can't differentiate between her own healing and whatever the powder does. it's easier to just say yes. she stands -- looking to break off a nicely sized branch. she strips it, jerry-rigging a splint. ] Your leg...where does it hurt? Is it broken?

[all7seas]

Dunno. It's my knee, when he...

My knee.

[He cannot bend the leg at all, now. More rum is in order.]

[herotypical]

[ a sympathetic sound. knees are not the kind of thing that even a slayer wants to have hurt.

buffy is carefully freeing her hurt arm from the jersey knit cardigan she has as a top-layer over a broad-strapped tank. she'll have to tear it up. ]

I'd be dead, Jack...[ if it wasn't for you and your knee. she frowns; would it be crass to ask whether that pesky life debt is settled? ]

Buffy? Hush.

[herotypical]

No. I won't hush.

[ she plants the cardigan on the ground with one foot and tears one strip free, then a second. ] That Shifter was coming here. I would've been easy pickings, alone.

[ it's not easy to say and it shows in how hesitant she sounds. ] Credit where credit is due.

[all7seas]

[He takes a deep breath; releases it. Loses his debt.] It's fulfilled, then. Done.

Might be the first debt I've paid off in years. Oooooooor since Jones...

You're off the hook. Hookless. Which is...kind of funny if you're me and from a time when making hook puns about a pirate might actually be the highlight of one's day.

[ she goes to work at at splinting her arm. once this is done she can focus on getting jack back to medical help. ]

[Have a snort, Buffy. You can't possibly do that yourself, you know. Not properly.] Come here.

[ she doesn't like help, jack. :< ]

Can I see your First Aid card, please? [ huff. but she crawls next to him and surrenders the fail-splint into his care. ]

[He clucks his tongue, mock concern covering up the real concern.]

Not in the habit of showing my cards, am I.

[With firm but gentle fingers, Jack pulls the red sash from around his waist and adds it as extra padding between her skin and the sticks she has chosen. He uses the strips she has torn up to begin to tie the contraption into place.]
