[ a slight shrug. there's no point in being modest about it; archie probably needed to know. ]

That and a wicked ice-skater. [ she looks from one downed beast to the other with a nod. ] Nice shot.

Thank you! [He cocks his head, listening.] Do you hear any more?

[herotypical]

[ she pauses. ] That's a...nope, I hear some birds? But unless you're feeling like chicken tonight, I'm not sure that's an important observation of mine.

[ buffy wrinkles her nose at the bloodied scythe blade and crouches to clean it off on the grass. ]

[Archie wipes his sword quickly and sheathes it, then pulls out his gun and starts to reload.] Chicken. It isn't quite right, is it? Last time, they were everywhere. Now I want one and there's none to be found. Are you tired?

[Referring to the narcolepsy.]

[herotypical]

Very. [ she admits, shouldering her scythe. ] I guess now's the time I'm supposed to thank you for waking me up.

You're welcome. [He says it idly, still listening for other sounds. There's no need to thank when he was doing his--sigh--duty.]

[ she leans back against a tree. resting. ]

...That's my first slice of action.

Today, I mean. I guess it probably doesn't count when it's not really the enemy but...it helps. With the fidgeting.

[Gun reloaded.] We should go back.

[herotypical]

[ she looks as though she wants to argue but...no, she knows when a point is beyond fair. ]

Probably. Y-yeah. Now that there's no worry...[ of being followed. ]

...What's wrong?

[herotypical]

Just...not a feeling I'm used to, that's all.

Going back to camp?

[Going back at all?]

Being the escortee rather than the escort.

[ she isn't sure if archie sees it that way, but she certainly does. ]

I'm not escorting you, Buffy. At least no more than you're escorting me. No one should be out here alone after dark. [He corrects himself.] No one with merely human powers, at any rate. And no one with a tendency to fall asleep suddenly.

[herotypical]

[ and she has a date to keep once the sun sinks away. a date with a painted cannibal king; a flicker of guilt crosses her face. there are things about this draft that lighten her heart, not burden it. ]

So I keep hearing. All the worst things come out at night.

[ she begins walking. ]

How long have you known how to shoot a gun?

[He walks with her.] My grandfather taught me when I was...

[He has to think about it so long that he doesn't come up with a response. Really young, apparently.]

...That young, huh? Wow.

He wanted a grandson in the navy. I think I must have been around nine or ten, I suppose.

...Did you join 'cause of him, then?

Him and his stories. [He remembers the old man fondly, even though he's now aware of how manipulated he was by his good, if selfish, intentions.]
