Apparently, there was ki--[ it's probably a good thing that they're walking so far apart. this allows buffy to miss out on that surprise -- although she certainly seems quite surprised over jack's sudden sinking. ]

...Stay still! I think. [ a moment of indecision. ] TV says you're not supposed to struggle. And I'll... [ find something to haul him out with. something longer than the scythe. ]

Kissing? There was kissing? Did he snog her, or did she snog him?

[Very slowly he was beginning to slip further in, even though Jack was trying to stay very, very still.]

Kennedy, you devil.

Not the time for locker talk, Jack. [ what are you? ] And also, even if it was -- wh -- [ she breaks off that thought as she breaks off a decently sized branch and gets close to the ground as she extends the aid out to him. ]

Hold on. I'll drag you out. [ though the ground's pretty comfy, eh? ]

Haul away, Annie! [He has a firm grip on the branch.] I'll bet she snogged him. How much shall we wager?

[ and so haul she does! ]

...I am not taking bets on the forwardness of my baby sister, Jack Sparrow. That just -- no. [ BECAUSE BUFFY DOESN'T WANT TO LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE DAWNIE MAKES THE FIRST MOVE. ]

Well I'm not taking any bets on Kennedy's forwardness, am I? Are you certain there was kissing?

[He has one hand on the branch, now, the other dug in to the soft soil, scrabbling for a purchase on it. He is so filthy.]

Dreadful stubborn stuff, quicksand.

Well, it's not like I held their hands through the momentous occasion and took Polaroids for the scrapbook.

[ oh god he is getting so much more messy why did she agree to clean him off. why does she always agree to clean him off. ] Dawn told me.

[Finally they are making some headway; his hips have cleared the sucking sand, now, and he is trying to pull himself the rest of the way.]

Told you she snogged him til his little tail wagged? Never expected Summerses to kiss and tell!

She said no such thing. Don't go projecting all your horrible, horrible, piratey thoughts on Dawn's cute little romance. I'm sure it was all very...[ she grapples for the right word as she reaches for jack's arm. ]

Unfrench. [ it had better have been. ]

[He clings to her wrist, hauling his legs free.] I'll have to ask him about that, won't I.

[ this look is nigh murderous and also getting nearer as she tugs him roughly up and towards her. ]

Don't you dare. [ gossip about her sister's love life and risk losing yours, o captain my captain. ]

Why not? Best I check in with Kennedy and make certain he's doing it right, isn't it?

[Jack. This winding. Is dangerous, son.]

...That only works if you're doing it right yourself, you know. [ he's doing it so right.

but that's not the point. the point is his winding is dangerous and so is buffy. ] Maybe he'll be better off if you don't say a thing.

[all7seas]

[Naturally Kennedy will be MUCH MORE BETTER OFF if he said nothing.]

I mean, it's not like I can vouch for your moves. It's been so long. I can't even remember. Slipped my mind.

[ it hasn't been that long. but one good winding always deserves another. ]

I suppose I could remind you, like. If it has been that long, and you needing to be kept awake and all...

[ she's fussing over him; pulling him further away from the pit, brushing off dirt, de-mudding him. ]

I thought the captain's orders were all about getting back to camp, huh?

Very well, Buffy. Captain Sparrow will belay any talk of long luxurious kisses and bring you promptly back to McCoy. There your tongue will be put to much more better uses, I'm sure.

[he gets to his feet, enjoying all the attentions.]

Oh God, this is gonna be a nightmare. [ being camp-bound will not suit her well at all.

she unties a bandanna from her right arm and takes to using it to mop up some of that mud. ] Albert had me in one of the offensive squads. I'm supposed to be out there, Jack.

[all7seas]

[He smiles down at her, taking hold of the belt loops on those cargo pants and idly threading his fingers through them. He knows she knows all the reasons WHY she needs to stay back.]

It's surprising, my love, how many times the defensive must turn into the offensive. You know this, eh?

[herotypical]

[ buffy has always played these drafts like numbers games. they aren't like the typical sunnydale battle. instead, they are much closer to the attrition-style fight of the last day in that town. and she always feels as though the faster she can take the third partiers down, the faster she can bring her comrades back to the village.

she pauses in her work, arranging a dread or two. ] I know it. I just don't like it.

[ and she really doesn't like disappointing albert. ]

You'll be right as rain soon enough, and then you can scuttle off to the lines and kill things. Me, I'm happy to stay back and guard Bonesy's camp.

[Jack could care less about Albert on a good day.]

[herotypical]

[ she tilts her head up and toys with reneging on those captain's orders.

and then she does. ]

[That pretty much drives out thoughts of returning her to McCoy, at least at that moment. Jack is far more interested in helping her disobey orders until he needs to breathe again.]

[ or at least until she slumps forward against the pirate and again falls asleep.

which she then also does. ]
