Draft Log #3: During v. 2.0

[ McCoy watched this scene unfold from the relative safety of Hornblower's ship and his heart leapt into his throat as the Elizabeth burst into flames and crashed into the ocean. oh, god. there was a reason he called those goddamn contraptions a death trap and this was it.

McCoy hears the orders from Horatio and his decision is immediate: like hell was he going to let his fears dictate his life any longer -- he was going out there to help his best friend and any other poor soul caught up in that mess.

the doctor climbs into the lifeboat with Kennedy, his life-jacket securely fastened and medical kit held tightly underneath one arm, eyes fastened fixedly on the shimmering flames rising above the waves and burning triumphant the face of the storm.

Damn it, Jack. ]

[Seeing the Elizabeth go down in flames made Archie feel a little bit like he was waiting at the wrong end of a bridge loaded with explosives and waiting for a sign that may never come. While he commands the jolly boat, he watches desperately for any sign of Jack--even if it's pieces of him floating in the water.

The sea looks empty of him, until by some miracle that familiar body floats to the surface, face-down, as if lifted up by some entity from underneath.]

There! HARD A' STARBOARD! Jack! JACK!

[It looks like he's about to go under again, and they're not coming about quickly enough, so he dives into the water and swims toward the floating pirate.]

[ McCoy turns just in time to witness Archie jump overboard. he looks stricken and braces himself, hands darting out to the side and steadying the jolly boat, trying to keep a level-head as Kennedy splashes his way towards the prone form of his friend. ]

Jack! Archie!

[Archie manages to reach Jack and get his face out of the water, but he can't see the man's condition right away. He struggles to bring him back to the jolly boat, going under himself once or twice, but always keeping the pirate's face above water.

When he reaches the side, he sputters:] Get him up!

[ he nods numbly at Archie's order and reaches to grab the pirate. he struggles to haul him into the boat with him and, of course, the effort itself causes the vessel to tilt unfavourably to the side and the sight of water lapping and licking against the boat strikes renewed fear in McCoy.

but he endures it, holding his breath and heaving with all his might and succeeds in dragging Jack onto the boat with him. he barks out a breathless exclamation to the lieutenant in the water and hopes he's already climbing back in. ]

G-Got him!

[Archie climbs back in once Jack is in the boat, kneeling at the pirate's side anxiously and awaiting McCoy's word.]

[ McCoy said nothing, but he'd already taken into account the burns that were littering his arms and his chest as he rolled the pirate onto his back, checking his airways. ]

Good God. [Archie can't think of a time when he's seen a man this badly burned. He's seen many other horrific wounds, but doesn't know what to make of these except that they are bad and they are on Jack. He feels utterly helpless, seeing him like this, knowing he can do nothing except order the boat back to the Endurance.]

[ the doctor barely hears Archie, but there's one thing he's certain of: they aren't going back to the endurance. not while there are medical facilities waiting them on the shore, which would help more than whatever passed as a sickbay in that rickety old boat Hornblower commandeered.

he may have issued the order to find survivors from the wreckage, but he didn't say anything about coming back with them and he glances over his shoulder, expression taut and serious. ] Kennedy, get us back to the shore.

[If the doctor said it, Archie's not going to argue. He gives the order and the boat comes about, headed directly for shore.] Is he alive?

He's alive. [ he murmurs as he reassesses the other man's breathing and circulation. by some miracle, Jack was still breathing. but he had more than likely swallowed a lot of water and manoeuvres him into the recovery position in the boat. ]

[Archie lets out a breath.] It looks bad. Is it bad?

[ a beat. ] It's bad.

[He swallows panic.] Tell me what to do.

I need... [ to get back to the shore, to stop all this rain, to get off this damn ocean. stress took hold and reached for his dermal regenerator. ] you to help me. Get something to cover him up with.

[It was bad. The pirate's breathing, such as it was, was shallow and labored. And then it stopped entirely as the shock hit his system.

WHO WOULD SAVE HIM NOW?]

Leonard! [Archie cradled Jack's head, heart leaping into his mouth.]

Damn it, he's going into shock! Archie, put him down!

[The pirate is not responding to either of them. His skin has gone a horrible shade of pale, like that of a dead man.]

[Archie obeys immediately. There's nothing in the boat to cover him with, not even Kennedy's own coat, which he'd left on the ship.] He isn't breathing!

[ he knows, Archie. but he isn't going to be sarcastic about it and places the heel of his hand in the middle of Jack's chest, fingers interlaced as he presses his other hand on top and begins compressing his chest. ]

[Still not breathing, though there is a heartbeat. RESCUE BREATHING IS A GO! THE KISS OF LIFE, MAN!]

[ McCoy swears loudly as he tilts the pirate's head back, pinches his nose and breathes into his mouth. kiss of life is a-go. ]

[It takes a lot of kissing. A lot of life kissing. But soon enough, the unconscious man's breathing resumes on its own: shallow, a bit raspy, but breathing nonetheless.]
