I see the bad moon rising / I see trouble on the way

Who: Everyone!
What: There are these crazy masks everywhere, you see. And does the moon look strange to you?
When: The 23rd through the 30th. (If you want to backdate a thread in here to the 22nd for some reason, feel free. A separate log for the day of Halloween will go up at a later date!)
Where: Everywhere!
Summary: Things are starting to get a little spooky around here. What with masks that range from silly to creepy to downright menacing turning up everywhere, the people wearing them beginning to act strangely, and that menacing moon looking down.... why, it's starting to feel a little like Halloween.
Rating: Anywhere from G to hard R for violence, I'd imagine.

He shut his eyes and tried to lie again.

"I'm not..........a pirant. Ate. I am not a pirate. Not. A. Pirate."

The mask felt almost like it was burning him, though his skin was untouched.

She felt a surge of triumph and pride -- that was one thing which must have been a lie. To take it as truth would have been pure silliness. So Buffy swept closer and tried to sneak her fingers under the edges of the mask. One hand pried at the forehead while the other tried to wiggle its way under the chin.

"Keep going. Another one."

"My boat...my boat's the biggest and absolute hugest and fiercest in the Luceti ocean!"

The mask was wiggling more--loosening.

"She's...she's loaded down with treasure!"

[herotypical]

Light, coaxing tugs. She didn't want to end up tearing the man's face off with the mask -- and was already horrified enough at considering that it was a possibility.

"Hey. One of those wasn't a lie. Try harder."

The lying was getting easier as he went. Jack was a master, after all.

"I'm an honest man, Annie. And I cannot stand the sight of you. And I absolutely do not want to tangle my fingers through your hair and kiss every bit of you."

Looser. Looser.

[herotypical]

She planted her naked feet that much more firmly against the ground and put a little more elbow grease into her work; she was gratified to feel the object in contention loosen its grip on her lover's face.

"And one day," he growled, trying to help her with the prying. The mask shifted. "One day, I will sink the Black Pearl myself. I will send her to the very bottom without remorse!"

And the porcelain prison popped free.

Buffy was quick to fling the mask far, far away from them. She threw it in a wilder and harder miming of her frisbee throws from the week before; the mask sailed on. It smacked with a soft clatter into the trunk of a birch tree before dropping dead-weightishly to the ground. Unshattered. With intoxicating relief, Buffy felt the musculature of her own tongue begin to free up.

She turned back to Jack -- devilishly handsome and sporting his own face again. A face she very much rather liked and could appreciate anew as she first pressed a palm to his cheek and then drew him into a celebratory hug.

"My Annie," he murmured. Happy to hold her and be held. "You freed me."

[herotypical]

"Rescued," she breathed the correction like the inside joke and private reference that it was.

[all7seas]

"Mmmmmmm rescued, then, you little lovely devil. Rescued me. Because? Hero."

[herotypical]

"Not gonna lie," she stepped back from the hug. "I didn't expect Halloween to start coming so early, this year."

[all7seas]

"You don't recall last year?" He'd walked around in a ghost sheet for days a year ago. "Erm...possibly better NOT to recall it, actually." Because Buffy had been extremely unhappy with him at the time.

[herotypical]

"Did it start this early, last year?" A shrug. That Shift had targeted those with traumatic memories and experiences; she had been rather emotionally crippled by the whole thing.

And he had given her gloves. The fountain. She tried not to frown too deeply.

"...I'll never live down the go-go boots." Because that was the most rational part to complain about. Sure.

"They were beautiful. And you had red hair. So beautiful. But I missed your golden hair." And he'd given her gloves. She'd sneered at them, but taken them, and he felt like he had taken at least one step toward trying to bail out a boat that was hopelessly sinking.

[herotypical]

A bit of awkward shuffling.

"You know, you're not being compelled to tell the truth anymore. Just thought I'd point that out."

[all7seas]

"Ah." He quieted, then. Possibly a topic change was called for. "Well bein' a ghost wasn't so bad, in the end. It could've been a lot worse."

He could have been...whatever the hell Derek had been.

[herotypical]

"I wonder if this one'll end in a ball, too. With costumes and stuff. Could be salvageable."

[all7seas]

"Could DANCE together! Me an' you!"

[herotypical]

"...I could be on board for that. Very on board, in fact. But what's the verdict on costumes?"

He just mouths the words "leather dress."

Hmm. She stared at that mouth. And then at those eyes -- dark and lined and unmasked, now, and loved.

[herotypical]

"Oh, what the hell."

Aaaaaand just this face, now, Buffy. Because Captain Jack Sparrow is officially completely floored.

Mmhm. That face? Totally worth it. Who would've thunk that such a concession would have ended in her playing the smug card?
