By the time morning hits Luceti, the Moon has begun to breach the barrier, noticeable by how the barrier will fluctuate about the Moon's face in strange ribbons of energy. The oceans and lakes begin to rage as they are caught by the Moon's gravity. The ground begins to quake in an unsettling way. Small and harmless tremors that will slowly intensify over the course of the day. With the Moon already partway through the barrier, it will be noticeable that it is not quite as large as the real Moon. Though quite vast, the Moon itself does is not quite the entire size of Luceti, but is large enough to span the entire village and more. The Moon's angered face does not cease for a moment, even as it becomes the only sight in the sky.

Yet it remains in the sky, slowly breaking through the barrier, and proving indestructible in spite of all that is thrown at it. In the evening it will begin to cause gravitational disturbances, drawing up debris and small objects into the air. When it finally reaches midnight, the bottom of the Moon will be one mile above Luceti. At that point, all will suddenly black out and know no more. What becomes of the Moon? Does Luceti go splat? Will CJ finally get his moon rocks? Stay tuned!

Then Jack recalled the bunny hood. Maybe NOT a bunny. That had been plenty of trouble.

"We have a fair supply here, don't we. Plenty of peanut butter." He nodded in approval, drumming his fingers on the countertop.

"...So no protein deficiencies on the list of things to worry about." The flippant and unconcerned voice was out to play again. Anything else and she was certain she would break down from all this pressure. All these choices.

"The moon. Do you think it's an experiment or an accident?" Sometimes it was hard to tell the difference between which Shifts were intentional and which were actually counter to the Malnosso's plans. Somehow, she couldn't see the Organization wanting to satellite-strike their test subjects out of existence.

George is Mairead's FAVORITE THING EVER.

The drumming stopped.

"Neither. I think it's a mean-spirited trick, is what I think."

And victory would be preserving Jilly's innocence and helping her to feel safe and unafraid.

"...It's definitely not a treat," she mumbled. Then, louder: "Still -- a trick? Still counts as intentional. And if it's intentional then we're probably not in any real danger. Missions are supposed to start up in a few days. Right? Why exterminate your labour force?"

But Jack was thinking, now, of Horatio Hornblower and all of his plans. This timing was very convenient, now wasn't it? Hornblower plotting and whispering rebellion against their captors---or were they allies?---and trying to win co-conspirators to his side. And now this.

"Maybe not exterminate...but frighten? Injure? Maim? That would serve them well enough, I imagine."

He didn't respond to that topic of missions quite yet. Jack had been mulling that over ever since the announcement.

"Well, the first box has already been ticked. I ran into a seer in pretty bad shape, a few days ago. It's never a good sign when the seers get twitchy."

Or, in Rui's case, near paralyzed with fear and illness.

"No," he answered softly. "Not ever a good thing, that." The pirate crushed his eyes closed for a few seconds and muttered something to himself. It sounded good enough in his head, and so he turned to her and said it in normal tones:

"You want to be out there, in the thick of it."

"It's where I do my best work, but..."

"But?"

The last thing he wanted to do was limit her freedom: hold her back. Never. He couldn't bear that.

[herotypical]

"But the last time we had tremors like these, half the house ended up sinking."

[all7seas]

"Then I'll get her out. I care about very little right now, Buffy Summers, aside from you and her and a few others who can look after themselves."

The honesty mask was off, but the honesty gloves were on. He would sell his life dearly but he'd sell it all the same if it would save Jilly. He knew Buffy knew this. He was offering her an out.

[herotypical]

The out wasn't much of an out, in the end. After all: "And who's gonna get you out, huh?"

"You understand that I can look after myself in that sort of situation, slayer? That in the last quake I......got myself out perfectly well."

[herotypical]

"...You understand that I don't really care, right? You're -- I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."

It had very little to do with not trusting Jack to look after himself. It had everything to do with wanting to keep an eye out regardless.

"On equal terms?" he asked suspiciously. You'll let me look after you as well?

...Equal terms? Her gaze narrowed. She took a few steps further into the kitchen and reached for a bag of bagels on top the microwave. She worked at the twist-tie.

"Sure. Yeah. Equal terms."

His eyes narrowed in return as he stared down her back. "Liar."

[herotypical]

Her face got a little...stony. Hard and fierce and ready to argue. But then she softened with a sniff and pulled free one bagel. "You know, it's your fault I'm still such a bad liar. You were supposed to teach me."

[all7seas]

"Corrupting one woman was possibly enough for me, slayer." He reached up and took down a package of granola bars.

"I didn't mean--" Hmph. Fine. She wasn't interested in arguing if he was going to throw the title around. It only made her uncomfortable. It only reminded her of the many contradicting reasons why she shouldn't be with him in the first place.

Buffy retied the back and reached for a bread-knife. Bagels were always tricky things to cut. Too often, she ended up cutting them crooked.

Jack peeled open one of the bars and ate it hungrily. It had been since early morning that he'd last eaten anything, after all.

Was it really in his interest for Buffy to be a better liar anymore? Yes and no. If it would save her life...? But then what would she keep from him? But wasn't keeping things from him an asset? Did he really want to know everything.

No. No, he did not.

There were a fair number of things she still kept from the pirate but they were hardly the sorts of things she had to think about lying for. They were things that might as well have never occurred for how little she spoke of them to anyone. Some of them had been recently dredged up in accompanying Giles to the tunnels -- old wounds reopened just to warn him of what he'd soon be remembering.

She popped the crookedly cut bagel halves into the toaster and leaned her elbows on the counter -- away from him, still -- just to watch the appliance as it worked.

"Annie?" When Jack spoke her name, it was in a low voice: an appeal. He didn't like all that "away"ness. It was like after the battle with Derek--the spar with Angel--all that hardness, brought on by the urgency of a dangerous situation. All of that slayer, coming diamondlike to the surface.
