Where: The Mining Facility
Summary: It's an underground mine! And the Malnosso want you to kill and capture all the bad guys! Oh, but don't let the rocks fall on you. That could hurt.
Rating: B for BLOOD. Seriously. People are going to die. People have already died. We're not going to make it out of here. We're all screwed, it's Game Over, man!

[For better or for worse, he does not understand the joke. Still, he gives a nod before following the tracks along the cavern again, hands posed to take up his blades at any moment.]

...Didn't realize you could handle a blade, you know. In a non-scalpel fashion. Where's you learn?

I was a duellist at Trinity College, in Dublin. [And he doesn't often admit the second part. But Buffy, he will tell.] And I fought alongside the Republicans for France.

A man with layers. My favourite. [ casual; distracted. her eyes are elsewhere. ]

Duellist? Like -- fencing? Rapiers?

Fencing... yes.

And duelling. Pistols and swords both. Sometimes to first blood... sometimes not.

Oh. Duellist as in....duelling.

[ a sniff. ever since jack and archie's little duel? she hasn't thought much of regimented violence. planned assault. it rubbed her the wrong way -- an it rubbed her even more wrongly when jack tried to explain it away as men stuff. ]

Should I assume that you were pretty hot stuff?

I was an Irish Catholic and... had something of a temper. I learned how to handle a pistol and sword quickly.

A temper? [ she sounds unconvinced. he seems so calm, with her. sweet. gentle. but then -- of course -- she had just seen that icy veneer over the doctor's face. and now she was at war with him.

people could be mercurial. she knows this. ] Still feeling itchy about the whole pistol thing but...swords? Good. Great. It'll do you well -- especially in these drafts.

I was young. [And in a place that had little love for Irishmen, Catholics, and all his other oddities. His "temper" was really more a case of having cause to be offended and being offended. But that feels difficult to explain.]

It has served me well. Hopefully it will here as well.

Looks like it already has. Have you run into any of the Elites yet? [ or, worse: ] Shifters?

I don't believe so. I... haven't really been paying attention, though. If it came after me, it died.

[ then, gently: ] Have you heard about the Shifters?

[ they're the one thing she's worried about.

well...the one thing plus that other thing that she's also vaguely hopeful for -- a rare sighting of the general.

I know you mentioned enemies. Very strong, armoured, I believe?

The Elites are armoured and the Shifters...well, they Shift. Notably? They Shift all abilities and magic and supernatural advantages away. From those of us who have them. From those of us like me.

[ and they can render her into exactly what she ought to be -- a petite woman. barely strong enough to move a piece of heavy furniture. ]

[Stephen looks at her for a moment, then... Then he nods.]

We had best see to one another then. Sword and pistol do only so much against armour. [And I can protect you from the others.]

[ hmm. it's interesting how completely, she realizes, she depends upon jack for those moments. the shifter moments. it's a strange dependence to uncover -- and frightening in the wake of the pirate's absence.

but there's stephen and his unspoken pledge and buffy, too, nods. ] Like I said? Teamwork.

[ and with that? she picked up the pace. looking for trouble. ]

[And he walks alongside her, hand on his sword's hilt, light eyes scanning the dim areas all around, ears trained for any sound of an enemy approaching.]

[ a while later: ]

...Huh.

[ was that a sound -- somewhere far ahead? like a pebble falling in a shallow pool of water, perhaps. she slows. ]

[Stephen freezes, looking up at the sound, and his dagger is out in a moment. Just in case.]

[ buffy is far more easy-breezy, for the time being. her scythe falls into a more pragmatic grip but this happens with all the normality of a person reaching for a mop or a vacuum cleaner.

large, green eyes slide over to the doctor. catching his gaze.

a smirk quirks her lips. ]

[Any kindness disappears from Stephen's face as he draws his rapier as well. His footsteps become that much more quiet, like a cat moving about in darkness, his lean body coiled and ready to strike.]

[ and it would seem as though their oncoming foe has also clued into the approach. there soon followed the cold cold sound of steel uncoupling from its sheath. shifting metal on metal -- an elite, then.

buffy breathes deep. demi-relaxed. they could dispatch this one. simply. cooperatively. but where he sank into stealth, she strides boldly forward and hopes that stephen will understand the implicit, gut-instinct plan. let her draw the soldier out and let him stay hidden. just at first.

she can take the initial onslaught; stephen could swoop in and capitalize on the elite's distraction. ]
