The pirate captain was walking along in the village -- braids a-swinging -- when she saw the man known as James Norrington. Approaching from the north. Blast it. Admiral Norrington</>, as she knew him.

Her back straightened. She would walk coolly by him, she would.

Like hell she would.

"Buffy? Miss Summers!"

He broke into a jog the moment that he saw her, stopped dead when he reached her, and fully expected her to stop as well.

[herotypical]

....Buffy.

He just called her -- she whirled on one heel. Her face? A mask of nonchalance.

"Sorry. Admiral. But who? Who are you asking for?"

[abidinglaw]

He isn't on his guard yet -- because, really, what reason does he have to expect her to be angry with him? Unless she's was in one of her moods, and if that was the case then there would be little use in treating her gently.

"Just this minute I am asking for Buffy the Slayer. Buffy the socialite shall have to wait. Oh, and I am certain that she can stand to put her fancy dress aside given current circumstances, don't you?"

Oh. Bully for her. The Admiral's apparently drunk or mad or both. Better that he be both, she thought.

So: "Sorry. Me? I'm Annie. Ann-ie. Who is this Buffy you speak of, anyway?"

Palm on pistol.

"If you must be Annie, can you at least do it in this direction? There is only so much that Willow and I can accomplish without -- sufficed to say you are wanted."

Despite his misgivings about the watcher's council, James agreed with them on the subject of slayers and social lives. Buffy was already spoiled, however. Giles had been far too soft with her. James was also displaying another trait borrowed from the council. He thought the slayer nigh invulnerable, almost as a point of pride. Worse, he did not share Rupert's experience of the girl. If he had, he'd have known that she was shifted from the moment he saw her.

Wanted. Her chin lifted -- it wasn't so much a point of pride but a measure of worth. Damn straight, she was wanted. In at least four of the seven seas. Probably more. It's not like she kept track.

"Your arrest-ploys are getting terribler and terribler, James."

[abidinglaw]

And he thought he'd made so much progress with her recently.

"It should not fall to me to arrest your attention on the subject of your duty, miss Summers."

[herotypical]

"What duty?"

[abidinglaw]

"Are you being willfully obtuse?"

[herotypical]

"Are you being willfully enigmatic? I don't do duty, James. It's kinda why I chose this life. Now -- scurry on."

She flicked her fingertips at him. Like shooing a dog.

[abidinglaw]

Let's just let him look at those fingers for a moment, aghast.

"Excuse me? So long as you an I are here and Rupert is not you are my responsibility. I will not be shooed away like some dog."

[herotypical]

"Admiral. Sweetie."

He did have a certain...attractiveness to him. In some lights. If she stepped to this side and looked way way up. Annie slipped her pistol from her belt.

"I am not and never have been your responsibility -- no matter what the Navy tells you."

He had never heard of the council being referred to as a 'navy' before, regimented though they undeniably were. Still, any comment that he might have made on that subject - that and her repetition of the word 'admiral' - was undermined by the appearance of the gun. If ever he were to fear a weapon in her hand, it would not be a gun. All the same, however, he was only human. Unholstered guns had a way of escalating things.

"Pity that it is not your place to make that decision. Pity, too, that you should have chosen to outfit yourself with that barbaric toy. Guns do no suit you."

"Do you like it? I just, hmm, picked it up. Recently. Relieved its owner of the burden of...well...ownership."

She tossed the piece from palm to palm.

[abidinglaw]

"You stole it?"

Alright, maybe now he was beginning to wonder if perhaps this might not be his Buffy after all.

[herotypical]

"Can you ever actually pilfer from another pirate? I've always been unclear on that part."

[abidinglaw]

"You -- of course. I should have seen it at once. The shift has you."

[herotypical]

"No one has me, James. I'm my very own Captain. No strings attached. Well -- not unless you want there to be strings.

How tall are you?"

[abidinglaw]

"Oh dear God."

[herotypical]

"O-oh. Slow down, James. The oh dear Gods aren't supposed to come until later. Y'know, behind closed doors."

Oh. Toying with the Admiral. This could be fun. "You do know that, right? Or is there no special someone in your life?"

[abidinglaw]

"Indeed.

Well, if you would only accompany me we could close all the doors your heart desired."

He and Willow could lock her in a room until they found a way to rid her of this delusion -- or else until it broke down naturally.

[herotypical]

She flattened the unpistoled palm against the hollow of her throat. Surprised.

"James. I never considered for a moment that you might be interested. What with all those...buttons. On your uniform. Which is missing today, I see."

[abidinglaw]

He did not understand -- and he did not have to.

"You may not know that you are Buffy Summers, but believing yourself Annie will not serve to relinquish you from your birthright. You alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. Pirate or valley girl, it makes little difference."

[herotypical]

Well, now she was growing ever so suddenly cheesed off. Why? Well -- it was that one word.

"No. You don't get it. Me? I don't have a birthright."
