"Well, I can transmute meat with it. Ed can transmute pretty much anything he wants. Why, are you an alchemist? Scientist, maybe?"

"Watcher."

He said, and although he had his doubts about the efficacy of the council he still managed to sound pompous saying it. Old habits.

markofthewise: (And I care because...?)

This was not an unfamiliar term for Sokka. But it was not one that he could immediately apply a definition for. Just that at some point, it was a thing that mattered.

"So... you want to help by watching me?" Dubious. He was pretty sure that would just make him screw up.

Oh. Dear. Norrington deflated at once.

"What? No! The Watchers are an ancient order - keepers of knowledge, and skilled in the arcane arts."
markofthewise: (Couldn't care less)

There was a mischievous sort of satisfaction he gained out of seeing the Watcher sink.

"So its an art thing? I know that's an important part of alchemy, but I'm getting better at making perfect circles. I even keep a compass on me just in case."

"It is a magic thing. Actually. Though no doubt the Watcher's council would flee before the combined might of your perfect circles and transmuted meat."

He opened the page of a new tome. This one had no title on the spine, but a strange symbol was set into the front cover. Presumably the watcher picked the book up on the basis of that symbol. There was nothing else upon the book to identify it.

"Ha ha. But for your information, alchemy is a science. But if I happen to need any magic goobidy gop, I'll be sure to give you a call."

Rude. Especially to a man he had just met. But justified, he felt, after the slight against him. He did notice the strange book though. The nameless one. "So what's that one about? The manual to acting like you know more than you actually do?"

"A treatise on the science of making a good first impression."

There were pictures every few pages - some bore strange swirly vortex patterns or cones of light, others displayed runes and symbols or hulking humanoid silhouettes. The watcher was much more interested in the written ext, however. He read quickly and dismissed pages summarily, muttering;

"Useless."

Sitting up a little higher, Sokka could see some of the pictures and runes and other things dotting the page. He slumped back down after his curiosity had been sated.

"So you're a friendship scientist and a watcher. Impressive."

"Indeed. And just this minute I am attempting to determine the nature of the strange affliction that has befallen our friends and neighbors. If you are quite finished there, perhaps you would not mind my asking you a few questions?"

He wasn't finished with his alchemy. But he could afford a break, at least.

"Ask away."

The fact that he had not known Sokka before the shift began would make this somewhat difficult. Ideally he would like to have a standard sample at his disposal - somebody from whom he could establish the differences between what is, and what should be. Perhaps he should start somewhere simple.

"I take it that you are aware that something is amiss in Luceti?"
markofthewise: (Oh jeez)

[personal profile] markofthewise 2012-04-14 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Painfully aware of it. Part of the reason I'm here."

For his part, Sokka remembered Norrington. He was, after all, the one in charge of the sea draft. But without the clothes for the part, he wasn't immediately placing him.

Well, that was something. Something small, granted, but something.

"And what do you perceive is occurring, exactly?"
markofthewise: (Keeping it serious)

"From what I can tell, it works on people in pairs. Someone from another world thinks they're from the same world as the other person, when they're not supposed to. Or at least, that's how everyone except those two see it." There was always the possibility the experiment worked solely on perception. "I think I'm still from my own world... but it sounds like my memories have been altered to include someone who isn't supposed to be there."
