"Back, eh? Not going anywhere for a spell." Jack held her firmly but he was worried, worried. They'd never had a chance to sort all that had gone between them on the Black Pearl. And then that wild time when she'd been a pirate...


She'd been a very good pirate. Annoying, though. Thorn in his side.

As memories of the Pearl flooded in, other memories were fading fast. The rest of the Caribbean, her made-up crew. Teague hung on -- silent but steady in her mind. But nuanced, now, with her own real thoughts. And a newfound familiarity with the Code, which pirate-her had stolen from the library and taken home with her.

"I, uhm..." Buffy stepped back. "I brought your things. The things she -- I took."

"Have I ever mentioned," he hazarded, unwilling to let go at first but then relenting, "what a brilliant pirate you'd make?"

[herotypical]

Just over a week ago, she had stressed to him that it might be for the best that she didn't go playing pirate anytime soon.

"Don't, Jack. There was nothing brilliant about that."

He merely grinned. It had been painful but...damn. His Annie. Marauding. In his coat. With his ring upon her...

Finger.

The locket at her throat.

"It was a shift, love. Not...not even the worst, at that."

[herotypical]

"I pointed a gun at you! I threatened..." She had threatened to many people. Katara, James, Albert. "And the -- and..."

Words failed her. She squeezed his wrists.

"A-are you alright?"

"Oi -- much better now, savvy? You used to threaten me all the time. I'm not fussed, Annie.

Buffy."

[herotypical]

"Exactly." Her expression was now carefully controlled. "I'd really rather not go back to...y'know. That."

[all7seas]

"We're not," he insisted. "You're you again and I'm me and you never...did all those things. Ever. And you were with me aboard my Pearl, weren't you. You freed her for me." His voice lapsed into tenderness with a little urgency thrown in.

"So you see, all will be well. Fine, even. Wonderful. Pure wonderfulness."

Or COULD be, if the tricksters who kept shifting them would ever leave them alone.

The Pearl. Just the name filled her with a vestigial wanting. Buffy pressed her lips into a smile and released his hands -- crouching to retrieve the bag.

"Pure wonderfulness," she repeated. Holding out his coat and pistol and a dozen other little things. Trying out a sweet and gentle voice. After a week of living a Buffy and Spike redux a la piracy, she didn't want to lapse into anything cold or angry.

It had been like being with Angelica all over again, and that he could do without, really. Jack didn't want the things. He wanted her again, and shoved them aside to take what he wanted.

"I thought I might prefer you as a pirate, once. But you know...you WERE highly annoying."

[herotypical]

"Is that supposed to make me feel better?"

Because it did. It did make her feel better. She signaled this silently by flattening her palms against his chest and leaning nearer. A tentative proximity as she tried to navigate her way back to being close to him without any sort of rivalry or resentment.

"Truth. You? Annoying as a pirate. I like you best this way. Though...I'll admit, the Pearl took to you. She did."

[herotypical]

"...I think I took to her. Probably too much."

[all7seas]

"Most pirates do, actually. You weren't near as bad as Barbossa, love."

[herotypical]

"Last week, that would have offended me."

She patted the side of his face and kissed his cheek and realized -- again -- that there was something amiss with his beard-tails. "This week? I kinda just regret being able to put a face to the name."

What, the beard tails he burned off in that horrible fire-breathing accident in Good Spirits?

The incident you are not supposed to find out about?

"And here I am, not wanting you to have any regrets over that madness."

"I have so many apologies to make." Although she still hadn't apologized to him. Not really. And instead of doing so now, she tilted her head. "...Did you lock lips with Adele?"

"Erm.......................aye."

"......Shift?"

He'd told her once that she could hit him if he ever dared to do that. So when he knelt on the flagstones of the kitchen floor, it was to present her with the side of his face.

"Annie? 'M sorry."

"Up. For God's sake, up."

Palms on display -- she stepped back. She hated when he hit his knees. And Buffy had done so much worse to him, she believed. Things that went beyond petty jealousies and Shift-induced smooching. A couple Valentine's Days and Luceti Valley had done them worse.

It was all the stuff about Teague that she felt most awful for. Teague and Jack's mother -- and there was still guilt sitting on her shoulders for that one. The Code.

"It's not like I didn't...I mean -- hmm." Well.
