The Cultural Fair

Who: Everyone! Or as close to that as possible, please. \o/
What: The Cultural Fair
When: April 25th-26th, though the earlier set-up days (22nd, 23rd, and keeping everything dry on the 24th) are also encouraged to help get a feel for it
Where: All around the town square
Summary: Also here.
Rating: ... is this a thing?

Note: Booths can be labeled as separate comments! Just put [booth name] or something in the subject line so people can find top level comments easier. Work was probably started for it on the 22nd-23rd for labor purposes, sheltering things from the weather on the 24th, and the actual Fair is on the 25th-26th, so using any of those dates and figuring out where your characters are helping would be good. CHARACTERS ARE WELCOME TO TAG THE LOG FOR INTERACTING WITH OTHERS, NOT JUST BOOTHS, SO FEEL FREE TO TAG IN! Also a character who might not know what's going on is welcome to walk by and question it! And so forth.

I'll leave the descriptions up to you all as there probably isn't much that is too uniform about the displays, as everyone is encouraged to be creative about it. Think of it as something on a much smaller scale than the festival from a year ago, definitely, but how hard the characters worked isn't something I could define for each of you. That said there are plenty of unique sights, so enjoy browsing! Thank you!

(Also, please add your name tags!)

[This cultural fair is very much an anthropologist's delight. She's been there practically all day, wandering from booth to booth with avid interest. Her notebook is out rather than stashed in her messenger bag, unsurprising with the copious note taking in which she's been engaging.

It's not so much the dragons that attract Brennan to Hiccup's booth but the viking garb he wears. Having already met some Napoleonic era sailors, she's been more attentive towards the possibility of encountering others from the past.

He's greeted with a smile and greeting in old Norse.]
Heill!
dragoneer: (Hopeful)

[Hey, it's not often he hears a greeting like that around here. Hiccup grins and waves.]

Hello! Uh--youuuuuu're not a viking, are you?

[He probably shouldn't count it out, even if she doesn't look like the typical viking woman. But Toothless does perk up a bit, looking at her curiously.]

[Her clothing is very much that of a twenty-first century professional: a purple button down shirt and pair of dark blue jeans covered partially by a white Burberry trench coat. Her black knee-high boots and eastern looking jewelry add to the image.

She shakes her head.]

No. The little bit of old Norse I know comes from brief lessons with colleagues at the University of Nottingham when I was brought over to identify remains found in Stavnsager.

[She grins, almost laughs a little.] I have to admit, this is the first time I've ever encountered a living viking.

[University...oh, right. A big school, if he remembers correctly. He's never exactly had a chance to study remains, but it sounds kind of neat--it a bit grim.]

Then it's prooobably the first time you've encountered a living dragon too, then, right?

[He gestures to Toothless, who is peering at her curiously still.]
truthin_bones: ([surprise] astounding)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-04-29 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's only when he gestures to Toothless that Brennan really notices the dragon. What is supposed to be a mythical creature means little compared to a living representative of the past.

But now that she's really seen Toothless, she's fascinated. She steps closer to the dragon, holding out a hand like one might with a cat or dog.]

Yes. Dragons are... fictional where I'm from.
dragoneer: (The gears are clicking)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2012-05-01 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Toothless is certainly more inclined to females than males, so when she reaches out her hand, he tentatively tips his head forward to smell it.]

That's how it seems to be for most people. But they're one of the most common creatures where I'm from.
truthin_bones: ([neutral] contemplative)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-04 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[She holds her hand steady in front of him, not at all nervous by the proximity. Even if Toothless is, well, a dragon.]

Then not from Earth, despite your comprehension of Old Norse or mention of Vikings.
dragoneer: (Or we could all get killed.)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2012-05-05 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[And here goes the smelling! Toothless is quite convinced he can tell everything he needs to know about someone from their smell and how they treat Hiccup--and she does have a pleasant smell...]

Well--that I'm not sure about. If it is Earth, it's a different version than most people are from, I think. [He'd figured that much from school.]
truthin_bones: ([interest] i'll consider it)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-06 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[There appear to be a lot of those. Perhaps almost a greater number of Earths represented than differing planets. It would be interesting to see which.

She looks around the table curious, searching for something. Her hand, however, stays in place for Toothless to smell.]
Do you have a map here?
dragoneer: (Ayyup.)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2012-05-07 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, no. I haven't found a copy of our maps in the library here, and I can't remember it. It's...been awhile since I've been home.

[Over a year now.]
truthin_bones: ([neutral] glancing down)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-08 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
You have my condolences. [A year is not something she would like to imagine. Anything past a handful of months, really.] It is also a shame that you cannot find any maps. They could be utilized in geological comparison of continents so that we could determine whether you are from another alternate Earth.
dragoneer: (Boredom)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2012-05-08 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
...Thanks. [Yeah. He's a bit homesick.] I'll keep looking for the maps--we definitely had them back on our island. I'd think they were pretty accurate, too. My tribe did a lot of sailing.
truthin_bones: ([interest] what's that?)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-09 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
As did the Vikings of Earth. While I was aware of other planets existing... the idea of convergent cultural evolution is not an idea that had occurred to me.
dragoneer: (Yup. There you have it.)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2012-05-10 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I just wish I had met some other vikings here. [He'd like to see firsthand what similarities and differences there were.] Oh--but I did meet Thor once. Yep.
truthin_bones: ([indifference] says who)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-11 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thor? As in the Norse god of thunder?
dragoneer: (Ayyup.)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2012-05-14 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yyyyep. That's the one. He had his mighty hammer Mjolnir and everything.

[Hiccup kind of. Flipped out.]
truthin_bones: ([pride] in your dreams)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-14 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[She laughs in disbelief, shaking her head and looking wide-eyed.] That is... highly unlikely.
dragoneer: (Hopeful)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2012-05-15 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I know, I know, it sounds crazy. But believe me. It showed up in the smithy--where I work?--and no one could pick it up except for him. And when he did, there was all this thunder and lightning a-and magic!

[He's sounding a little fanboyish now.]
truthin_bones: ([happy] small grin)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-16 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Are you certain that his timing was not coincidental with a storm?
dragoneer: (Ayyup.)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2012-05-16 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
...Pretty sure. Iiii don't think his armor suddenly appearing and forming around him was a coincidence, either.
truthin_bones: ([indifference] skeptical)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-16 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[She's not so much a skeptic as extremely rational. And gods, unfortunately, are one thing that do not fit into her rational view. So there's doubt on her face, despite her interest.]

Armor does not just suddenly appear.
dragoneer: (But you just gestured to all of me!)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2012-05-17 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh, dear.]

Youuuu...haven't been in Luceti long, have you? There's kind of a lot of things that happen here that you probably think are impossible.
truthin_bones: ([neutral] technical explanation)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-17 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only been here for a month and a half. [And, unfortunately, is extremely stubborn.] But even though I have witnessed... certain phenomenon difficult to explain, I still maintain that there is a logical explanation to everything.
dragoneer: (Buh.)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2012-05-18 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Is...magic a logical explanation?

[Hey, he's trying here.]
truthin_bones: ([neutral] contemplative)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-18 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[She doesn't quite shake her head, but there's a definite look of dislike that crosses her face at the term. But for a change, Brennan does not dismiss the question outright. Someone's been doing a lot of thinking.]

I... dislike the term. It speaks of a lack of understanding of natural processes. The lack of an attempt to utilize the scientific method to explain the phenomenon in the detail and complexity deserving.
