Event Log - Total Recall

Who: You and you and mostly me and you
What: Everyone's been Shifted in their own way
When: A hero doesn't care if this event last a whole ten days
Where: Everyone can blaze a hero's trail
Summary: It's that special time when the Malnosso collect all their recent experiments and apply them all at once to measure effectiveness. Although invaluable as research, it tends to leave the subjects looking just a bit mad.

So there is a mod post and it pretty much tells you EVERYTHING you need to know. This is a mass log for people to comment around on if they don't want to make posts. Or even if they want to make posts anyway. There will be at least one more of these later in the event! ENJOY!

Don't. Mention it again. Just don't. [Adele lifts a hand, the other massaging his face. Just. Deep, even breaths.]

I'm more stressed than I normally would be for one- and this past however long I've been somewhat high strung. Waking up as a man has not helped in the slightest. And then you pointed a gun at me- which brings up quite a few unpleasant memories if I might add. I'm not exactly at my most calm Red.

[A few days. Probably less, though. It makes Adele wonder why Levarre left, and Red remained. It didn't seem fair to him, not really. Even less with her, like. Well. This.]

...I think you might have had an easier time with the Empire.

Not at all. We're still fighting sympathizers.

[It was the truth, although Red wasn't certain which would be harder or more emotionally taxing in the long run. He was used to working in the background, not where everyone could see. The direct approach, which he would have to take with Fujiko, was never easy for him.]

I didn't recognize you--that's why I grabbed for the gun. Intruders aren't generally welcome, and Lupin would want to know who took his jacket. It wasn't the right course of action either, but I've never been a good physical combatant. I know some things, but this body has made certain moves tricky.

...you shouldn't have to be high strung. Don't you trust your friends enough to talk to them?

The aftermath is always the worst of it.

[He's quiet a long moment, not at all certain what it is he could say, or should say. this wasn't his strong suit. Without anything else to go on he reaches over to squeeze Red's hand.]

I don't blame you for the gun, I'd have done the same, really. I should have left a note. I was just. A little. Blindsided by being a man this morning. It overshadowed a lot of my common sense.

...of course I trust them. They're just not themselves right now. And that's how long I've felt stressed- shifts always leave me twitchy. I'll cope now that I'm me again.

[The sudden physical contact, made with gentle intent, surprises Red--he lets it show this time as he glances at Adele. The squeeze was returned, a friendly gesture.]

Everyone's been blindsided. Why do you think I left that note at the beginning of the week? I'll leave another telling him not to be so stupid this time. [He grins wryly, hoping that Lupin would listen to it while knowing what his odds were of actually being heeded.]

I'm myself. Well, part of myself. Since I'm part of Lupin, that doesn't count for much...but Lupin would have probably yelled right back at you earlier.

Did you want to talk? Letting it linger under the surface isn't very healthy.

So that was you. I had wondered.

[That surprise actually made Adele wilt a little. Ashamed of what he'd said- of the hurt he'd probably inflicted without thinking. He never did when he got that bad. The next step is easier, and less tentative. He stands, hand still in Red's, and walks over to the opposite sofa. Settles next to him and tugs Red close, looping his arm around the slim, feminine shoulders with minimum difficulty. There.]

It counts for plenty, Red. You and he are similar enough, and dissimilar enough, to be your own people. What you have in common makes it a little smoother...and.

He really would have. And that would have made it worse- Robert and I we'd. Get into the worst arguments over nothing. Eventually it wouldn't be about who's right anymore. The winner was whoever hurt the other person more.

I had an opening--I took it.

[He follows Adele's lead, not entirely certain what the doctor was intending. She declared vehemently nothing would come of their relationship, whatever it was, and many other things that night. It left Red conflicted. Did she change her mind about their relationship? Was physical contact the right or wrong thing?

Red settles into Adele's arms a little stiffly. He needed to figure out the best way to balance this.]

Your relationship with Robert sounds very unhealthy. Not even Lupin's that bad. He does things on impulse, but not specifically to hurt people. Not really.

And thanks for the words, Adele. They won't change my fate when this shift is over, but they do help.

[It was an apology, unspoken but present. An offer. Nothing romantic, now or ever, but this. This comfortable, casual camaraderie. This physical confirmation of a platonic relationship. Echo's of Levarre's intent, and Adele can't help but recognize it for what it is. A part of her does care for Red more than he should. And as much as he'd like to ignore it- that part aches with how much he'd hurt him.

Especially for something that wasn't his fault. Shots taken that were exceptionally cruel and petty. Cheap.]

...it wasn't at first. But. It became toxic over the course of a decade. Between that, the alcoholism, the gambling. I don't think it could have gotten any worse.

It's good that you got out of it then. Just, please. Try not to let your anger at him affect how you think of others.

[Because it was unfair to Adele herself otherwise. She deserved something good, something better than that. He sighs, the tension falling from his shoulders as he settles into her arms awkwardly. The offered camaraderie is welcome after the frustrating week, and he wanted nothing more than to kiss her chastely and forget about his problems.

He resisted. Doing that would upset their all ready delicate balance. Letting the desire eat away at his heart was better than ruining a friendship for Lupin. The man needed all of his friends right now.]

Eleven years of bad habits. It's a long time to get that ingrained into me. And a shoddy excuse.

[Adele turns, brushing his lips against Red's hair. Easy. It's almost odd how easy this is, now that they've both relaxed. Now that he's not angry, and not stressed. Now that he just...is. Even with the oddness of this body, even with the shift- with Red leaving soon. It's comfortable for a moment.]

I'm trying to break them. No one here needs to see what he'd pull from me.

[It was this casual intimacy that blurred Lupin and Adele's friendship, that frustrated the doctor and made Lupin's girlfriend more cagey than she all ready was. He leans into the touch, intent on just enjoying it while he could. Damn the consequences, he liked the strange friendship that they had.

Lupin felt the same way.

He casually slips an arm around Adele's slim waist and rests his head on her shoulder. It wasn't much, but it was something.]

Just don't get so angry over everything. That will solve a lot of the problems, and get you to smile more. Win/win, as they say in your world.

I don't know if you and Red haven't realized this but I am a very angry woman most of the time. It's just...hidden. I distract myself from it. Finding the source of that and coping with it would be fantastic- but when the source is the environment and situation there's terribly little to be done other than to continue distracting myself.

And then I become frustrated with the distractions and- it's a vicious cycle. One I hope to break myself from before I drive myself mad or do something foolish.

[Because this entire visit has been one act of foolishmess after another, and Red doesn't know the right words to say that would make her feel better. Another sigh. This was getting hard.]

It sounds like you need a better channel, like Lupin did. You're not desperate enough to throw yourself into fights, but it is starting to show. It's...little things. You're trying to hard to fix what you can't.

So, why not fix what you can?

[He'd come to return the jacket. Everything else had been...very unfortunate side effects of doing that. Perhaps for the remainder of this shift he'll just hunker down and hide in house 44. Or he could go through his usual routine and hope for the best.]

I don't know what there is in this place that I can fix, outside of work in the clinic. Perhaps if I go on more missions and earn enough points to obtain anti-shifting bracelets or the bandage that prevents individuals from being tracked by droids. A goal of some sort other than 'don't go mad' would do me good.

It would be. Why do you think Lupin is working on his goals? Because otherwise he will do something dangerous and get someone hurt--and he knows it.

[Fighting wasn't what he did by nature, but everything that Lupin did on a whim to escape boredom lead to him being injured in some way. The Theft of the Fountain, while sweet and even noble in his proclaimed goal, was also just another means of keeping busy. Hopefully it was one that wouldn't get him hurt again.]

Doing something like what you say, though, will make you only focus on the problems more than you currently are. Finding a different know might be better.

Then perhaps I should offer my services as a masseuse to the village at large, then. It would keep me busy and help others relax as well, and more focused on helping the things that I can fix than being frustrated with the situation.

[He'd been toying with the idea for awhile now, especially since Lupin and he had been exchanging massages in the battle dome to better relax. There are plenty that could use it; and probably more still that would benefit from it.]

Which defeats the point. That job is hard on the masseuses, and you'll stop because of exhaustion soon enough.

Red knew the point to her words, however, and pulled himself back together. He looked up at Adele, eyes firm.]

It might be best to focus on yourself and your friends than the village at large. You'll spread yourself too thin, and you'll be back in the same position.

It wouldn't be the only thing I do with my free time- and I do make certain I have free time now. It'd be a case by case basis- and not something done often.

[He snorts a soft laugh at that possessive whine. The almost adorable petulance that was more tolerable in Lupin's female body than it would in his normal form.]

I've already lent my skills to two others Red. You can't have a monopoly on my hands.

...Remember when I said that friends are everything for Lupin? I didn't exaggerate.

[He offers a weak smile in return for Adele's laughter. It was something he needed to hear before he let himself fully relax. Red sighs, and snuggles closer to Adele, intent on just listening to the woman talk and breathe for a short time.

Maybe he could set this weight down.]

Just don't do it for too many people, and make sure that you don't sacrifice your free time. Relax, stay out of trouble, take care of yourself. That's the most important thing here.

I know. But will it make you feel any better if I said it was nowhere near as special as what we normally do? For Willock it was brief and nothing more than a hand massage- they were terribly chafed. And Doyle had pulled something in his back and shoulders. It was more medical courtesy than it was just to relax.

[He reaches up to ruffle Red's hair with another soft laugh.]

Don't worry. You're still my favorite. And I won't fill up my free time. If I do I'll be passing out around the village again, and I promised I wouldn't do that anymore.

Mm. That's good.

[He leans into the touch, comfortable with the lingering affections. She wasn't his Goldie, but these little touches and short bubbles of laughter must have been what Goldie meant. 'You'll see her as she should be...'

His smile is wistful, but content. Whatever this was? It was all right.]

Lupin would be jealous if everyone had the same priviledge, but he's fine with being your favorite. Just don't let anyone else in on that program, because that's special.

No, no. That program is for he and I alone. Anything for anyone else would be done in their home, or in a program with one of those terribly awkward and uncomfortable massage chairs. No Thai spa for anyone but Lupin. Or you, if you pop back up and I'm not Levarre. Or...

[There's a thought.]

We could head down to the battledome now, if you like. You carry so much weight for yourself and for Lupin, Red. I'd think you've earned it.

[Red hadn't wanted to ask it himself, but was sorely tempted to as their conversation drew onward. He had been tasked with being an anchor, for more than just Lupin and himself. He needed to watch out for Luke, for Goldie, for Adele. He needed to watch out for the people connected to them...

It could only work for so long.]

Could we? I wouldn't say that I earned it, but it sounds like the best idea I've heard all day.

We'd best head out before someone else takes all the rooms then.

[He keeps his arm looped around Red's shoulders as he stands, pulling the slim woman up along with him. It's a little awkward, and he stumbles at the end, but they're up, and he's laughing. How many times had Remy done that to him in reverse?]

You have Red. You really have.

[Red chuckles at Adele's awkward attempts at guiding him along, willingly accepting the assistance even though he could have easily pulled himself up. His smile is warm and calm for the first time that day, and he moves in to embrace the doctor.]

Thanks. That means a lot to me.

[He loops his arms around Red's waist, as easy as anything really. It was almost habitual, an inch to the left from instinctive. Just. Different with their respective swapped genders.]

...I'm sorry she wasn't here longer. For you. [And that is the absolute last he'll say on the matter.] You need someone to hold you up sometimes as well Red.
