It wasn't lost on the pirate. "One hundred. Aye." He slumped back in the chair. "Heal fast, eh?"

Maybe he could try more Nala-healing later.

"And I need, uhm...not now but later. When I figure out what I should even say to him...

Hell. Buffy's mouth had moved too fast for her mind. And now, she couldn't quite recall if she'd ever given any indication that she had been working on this effort with the strategist. Collaborating.

"He'll want to know about it. He always...wants to know about these things. Record my big defeat for posterity."

"I trust him about as far as I could thrust a blade into his gut," came the even reply. "So...eight inches.



He knew about it all, did he."

"He knew enough."

"Right. Well then....I'll summon him to your bedside, shall I? And then slip away elsewhere so you two can chat it up about this and that."

"Later," she was quick to remind him. Buffy wasn't sure what she would say to Albert right now. Apologize, perhaps. Or simply deliver the new, inchoate plans that were already forming in her mind. Strength and purpose.

"Later," he said glumly. Buffy still didn't trust him. Her words to him as he killed the dream shifter ran deeper than a delusion.

[herotypical]

"Though, I'd...prefer it if you didn't go sticking any blades in his gut when you do go. Please."

[all7seas]

"As always, Buffy Summers, I am very happy to oblige you. Very glad and happy indeed.

For now, though...prefer not to go far from you, really. If that's alright."

[herotypical]

"I'd also kinda prefer that. For now. Really."

Because she felt it had to be stressed. "Honestly."

[all7seas]

"Good. Our preferences, in this instance, are one and the same."

[herotypical]

"Doesn't happen often, but when it does..."

She sorta-shrugged before reaching for her water glass. "I'm sorry, Jack. That I didn't make the best use of the chance you gave me."

"Sweet love? There's no call for apologies from you. Not a single one. You had the chance; you took it. It didn't pan out.




We try something else."

After the minor mountain of glass-fetching was climbed, she drank gratefully. Deeper drinks, this time. Her voice was sounding marginally better.

"Assuming there's something else to try. I mean -- there's gotta be. But things just keep looking dire and direr." Another drink.

The pirate waited to refill that glass. Her throat looked horrible. Terrible. Those bruises...

"Oh, I wouldn't say that. Not that you aren't looking dire right now, but love? You give me hope. Always have."

[herotypical]

"Hope." And strength and purpose, possibly -- but not the right kind. The General spoke of things which led to a penaltyless death. It was a code she now desperately wanted to crack. But it was likely too early and she was still too out of sorts.

"Jack, I..." Buffy shuffled awkwardly to one side of the bed. "How about you come join me? Up here? Please?"

Carefully -- so carefully -- Jack climbed in beside her, so afraid to hurt her further. "Hope. Since the start. You." And it hadn't been the whole slayer package, either. It had been just her. Just Buffy Summers.

"Just you."

[herotypical]

She wasn't able to nuzzle near or wrap up in his arms. She was barely able to lean leftwards and touch her cheek to his shoulder. But some contact was necessary after the cool parting on the prior day and for how absent she'd been during the rescue attempt.

She took his hand in hers and frowned to see blood still under her fingernails. His, she thought. Or hers. Who could tell?

Hope. It was so antithetical to how she most often saw herself, still. "I don't know what to say..."

His lips just brushed the top of her head. "Long as there's life? There's hope. And for you an' me, it goes beyond those bounds."

It was a nice thought. She tried to espouse it. It was the sort of thing she could tell someone else and believe it wholeheartedly as she did but today? Today felt so far from hope.

"Just like a Hallmark card."
