...The oldest was well over two hundred. [ not the sort of thing she's usually so honest about, but there's something in asch's demeanour and surprising receptivity that makes her want to divulge. ] That's two hundred of my pesky Earth years.

...I share what's essentially a DNA configuration with a 2000-year-old sentient group of subatomic particles. For the sake of comparison.

[ ...this is the most she's ever really learned about asch in one sentence. as such, she treats the information reverently. in fact, she treats it with the sort of reverence that isn't strictly shift-inspired.

her head tilts. her fingers close around the glass. and she measures her words accordingly. ]

That's...surprisingly acceptable. [ after all, couldn't something similar be said of dawn? her building blocks were made up of something much older. perhaps it was a case of being instead of sharing, but her mind still drifts to her sister.

and thoughts of dawn always make her more receptive, if not happier. ]

[He considers the question for a moment - debates saying no, debates saying yes, debates ignoring her entirely - until finally he shrugs his shoulders, taking a quick drink from his glass as if needing an extra boost of restraint-distiller.]

[That's a vague enough response to satisfy both of them, he figures.]

Are you talking about -- what? Being twins? Some kind of bloodline purity thing? Test-tube baby?

[ eh. even the men she finds herself horribly attracted to, she still gets a little rude when it comes to question time. ]

[Good grief, that's a hell of a question. The sort of question that would get him yelling at her any other time, actually. Instead he just scowls, glancing aside.]

I can't think of a "normal" equivalent. It's unique to Auldrant- the structure of everything on the planet, living or otherwise, is held together with what we call fonons, seven types of them mixed in different ways. And everything has a unique fonon frequency, even twins. An "isofon" is something that shares an exact fonon frequency with something else.

When enough fonon particles of the same type gather together in one place, it becomes sentient and has a frequency of it's own. The sentience of the seventh fonon is called Lorelei, and I have its fonon frequency. I'm its isofon.

[He honestly can't think of a way to explain it that isn't just... outright explaining it. Simply calling them twins isn't enough, bloodlines have nothing to do with frequencies, and "test-tube baby" is... well, Luke.

Who does share their frequency, admittedly, but replicas are different, too.]

...Has anyone told you that your -- uhm -- seventh fonon has kind of a girly name? [ not that asch is much better in the mind of a valley girl who's grown up beside many an ashley.

anyway. the important part to take away from this is that although buffy is poking fun -- and she is absolutely poking fun -- she's doing it in that calm and collected manner that ultimately suggests just how normal and not a big deal she finds it all to be. even if she can't parse out half the words, the core theory doesn't creep her out. ]

[That earns her a scoff and the most slight of smiles.]

I'm not sure that a genderless group of atoms would care, though it does have the voice of a man.

...Is it a nice voice? Y'know, easy to listen to?

[ buffy finds herself half-wondering why she cares. but she does care. she does indeed. ]

I... suppose? It's kind of deep, and old. Very old.

[His brows furrow.]

I imagine it would be more pleasant to listen to if it didn't give me a headache every time it contacts me.

...Direct-to-brain phone calls? [ she guesses. yeesh. buffy supposes for coverage like that, asch must be charged extra. ]

It doesn't still happen here, does it?

[ another guess. this curiousity is more legitimate. after all, she knows her own connection to the slayer line is somehow...weaker, here. ]

[dissonates]

Not here, no. I haven't heard it since I arrived here years ago.

[And he's obviously okay with that, considering its relation to his body's destabilization and the aforementioned headaches.]

It's funny -- [ she hazards ] -- how there are some tiny, quiet ways that being here instead of home is a godsend. Maybe they're not always dealbreakers, but they make a difference. I'd think that dodging those headaches was one of them.

[dissonates]

...Mm.

[He really can't disagree with that, especially considering...

And you've been a long while. Longer than me, and there aren't many of those left. [ ... ] Can you even remember the headaches?

[dissonates]

[She gets an uplifted brow at that.]

What, remember how they felt? It's like an old wound, the memory's faded over time. I just know that they hurt.

[ she speaks suddenly and her sincerity surprises herself, but -- somehow -- she simply hates the idea of him being in pain. it knits her brow and makes her frown. ] I mean -- I'm just trying to say that...

I wish it didn't have to. Hurt. You.

[dissonates]

[....Huh.

He's quiet for a moment at that, glancing over at her, then impulsively sets a hand on her shoulder, hoping to reassure. He doesn't fret about it, so why should she? Even though it's very kind of her to worry.]
