This post covers the first day, before the attack. Remember, characters here are not expecting an attack and are under the impression they will be going to Region 1 to fight. During this day, draftees will be restricted to T6 and T7 and not permitted access to other areas.

Only just; we spoke the day the draft was announced. She expressed interest in attending school.

What time does the school start?

[Layton looks up at him, sensing the change in tone.]

Well... whenever we return to the enclosure, I suppose. Perhaps a bit later if we need the time. [He pauses.] Nine o' clock. Is something the matter?

[Nine... That wasn't so bad, Diamond guesses, and he smiles in relief. Back to looking at his puzzles too!]

Nope! I just wanted to know, because I'm not really an early riser~. I'd rather have it be closer to lunch time, but nine's fine too. Missy'll just probably want us to go with her.

[reminded]

[Was that really it? ... Oh well. It makes sense. As a professor, he is very heavily informed about how much the youth like their late mornings.]

Oh, me and Pearl! We're her bodyguards-- Um, we were her bodyguards, then we were her friends, and now we're her bodyguards again. But we're friends at the same time.

[A pause.]

Pearl and I protect Missy, who's our important friend. She can take care of herself, but I guess it's kind of become habit...?

I see... [No he doesn't because how is a 12-year-old even a bodyguard, but okay.]

If you don't my asking, who exactly is Platina? I understand she had private tutors as well.

[to be fair, the only reason platina hadn't thought it too strange after a thought was because she figured that her father had gotten people around her age to keep her more low profile.]

She's the only daughter in a very... [What's the word he's looking for. Oh.] Prestigious line of researchers back home. And she's very rich! Her family is pretty well-known in high society, and they own a lot of hotels across Sinnoh. Missy's family is very important.

Interesting... It makes more sense now why she would be interested in school. [He taps his pen against his notepad thoughtfully.] So will you be attending as a student as well, or just as a bodyguard?

[heartofthematter]

[A student or a bodyguard... He finishes up the second puzzle and scrunches his face at the third. This was a difficulty he should aim for in creating.]

Mmm... What would be the difference?

Well, a student would complete schoolwork, participate in discussions, receive grades, and so on. A bodyguard, I could only guess, would stand at the back of the room and look intimidating.

Bodyguard.

[There's no hesitation in the answer. He likes learning, but he's pretty average with grades and if Missy caught wind of him having average grades....!

He doesn't want to think of what she might do to bring them up. Pearl too for that matter!!]

[Even if he isn't an official student, maybe he'll learn a thing or two by sticking around. Good enough for Layton.]

Ha ha, all right. I hope you'll consider keeping an eye out for the rest of us while you're at it.

Yes, sir! My Pokémon and I will be sure to do our best to protect everyone.

[He smiles, staring at the puzzle.]

... In return, will you help me with this? I can't concentrate on this many numbers...

[Pokémon... He knows he's heard that word somewhere.]

Certainly. [Something could be wrong with his setup. He leans over for a look, so cramped are their quarters. ] What seems to be problem?

It's just a lot of squares to take in. Is there an easy way to figure them out?

[Every time he tries a number, it's already taken up somewhere or it's not in the right spot. That's all.]

Ahaha. Some find it helpful to write the possible numbers down in each cell of contention. If a certain possibility doesn't contradict any of the other numbers in that row of column, then it must be the correct choice.

[So try a number in a block until one fits. Okay.]

Okay! Do you think I could make a blanket out of one of these? [As in, one the size of a blanket. A huge puzzle.]

A blanket? [A blanket that is also a puzzle? He wouldn't mind having one of those.]

I don't see why not. But a word of warning: you'd best keep it out of my sight, or else one day you might find the answers all penciled in.

[He giggles at that, nodding.]

You got it, but if I get that good I wouldn't mind making one for you too.

I would be honored. Unfortunately, I don't know the first thing about textiles or I'd try and return the favor.

Huh? [... oh.] Oh, I meant one the size of a blanket! Though a blanket puzzle sounds cool too.

[Let him take that in for a moment.]

That's... a very large puzzle. But there's nothing wrong with ambition, I suppose.

[Yeah. Something to give to Missy and Pearl. They could work on it together~.]

I don't really know if I could make one that size... But I kind of want to, so Pearl and Missy can work on it together. Do you think it's possible? How many numbers would I need? [He'd probably need help HAHA....]

It would be possible, I'm sure, but it would require a great deal of numbers indeed. [Going into the double digits... or maybe even triple digits? How feasible would this be...]

If it's a collaborative challenge you're looking for, perhaps a very large maze could be another idea.
