...All the more reason to go Rambo on its ass. [ she looks over her shoulder. ] We can't risk leading it back to camp.

[Where there are wounded...right. A sigh.]

We have to be quick.

[herotypical]

'Cause you just know that's what it's gonna be.

[ she shakes off the fatigue. tries to forget that she could fall into a doze at any moment. there's a something to take down.

buffy strikes off -- stealthily. ]

[Archie follows after, not as stealthily but not a total disgrace. He glances behind often, trying to make sure nothing is coming from that way.]

[herotypical]

[ if archie allows her, she will slip comfortably into the role of guide -- using clear hand signals when she believes they should slow up and when they should hasten ahead. ]

[He's more comfortable taking orders than giving them anyway, so he follows her lead, watching her closely. All at once, something growls behind him, and he whirls about, pistol at the ready.]

[herotypical]

[ she shifts immediately; incompatibility be damned. her grip twitches on her weapon and she falls back to archie's side. ]

[He's looking, and trying to see...when he hears something else behind them and turns to face it.]

There's more than one.

[herotypical]

Oh, joy. Of course there couldn't just be the one.

Maybe we'll luck out and they're just really loud puppies.

[simplestgift]

[He sees a glint as two eyes catch the light. Wide-set, large eyes. He whispers.] Very large as well. Buffy, if I fire at this one, the other might attack.

[herotypical]

[ back to back, then. ]

Do it. I'm ready for the second.

[A low growl. The eyes disappear briefly, then reappear, and the moment they do, Archie puts a bullet between them.

CRACK!]

[herotypical]

[ and the second shift monster breaks free from the foliage on buffy's side of the action. she advances quickly, swinging her scythe up in a sharp slice to the underside of its jaw.

a grunt. she hauls backwards and tears her blade free -- it's so comforting, being back at full strength and away from the village's capping. not even the fatigue can dent her quiet joy. ]

[This is, believe it or not, the first time Kennedy has seen Buffy in action. Judging by this face, he's clearly impressed.]

[herotypical]

[ she kicks out, slamming her heel into the monster's bloodied face. it's injured but still looking to cause havoc. ]

Holding up, Kennedy? [ buffy doesn't often use his surname -- what archie wouldn't know is that buffy once had a rather impertinent slayer under her command named kennedy. so when it comes to martial situations? it slips easily to her lips. ]

[Tucking his pistol away and drawing his sword.] This one's dead. [Now if there's an opening and he can stab hers...]

[herotypical]

[ there is an opening and the additional stabbing does a world of good -- the beast pauses, shudders, and buffy spins her scythe around in her hand before hacking hard down onto the thing's head. slicing deep down to the brain.

there's a spurt of blood; buffy doesn't even blink as she's painted with it. she steps back and has to concentrate to keep a satisfied smile off her lips. ]

[The blood spatters the lieutenant as well, who admires her handiwork.] You really are everything you claimed.

[herotypical]

[ a slight shrug. there's no point in being modest about it; archie probably needed to know. ]

That and a wicked ice-skater. [ she looks from one downed beast to the other with a nod. ] Nice shot.

Thank you! [He cocks his head, listening.] Do you hear any more?

[herotypical]

[ she pauses. ] That's a...nope, I hear some birds? But unless you're feeling like chicken tonight, I'm not sure that's an important observation of mine.

[ buffy wrinkles her nose at the bloodied scythe blade and crouches to clean it off on the grass. ]

[Archie wipes his sword quickly and sheathes it, then pulls out his gun and starts to reload.] Chicken. It isn't quite right, is it? Last time, they were everywhere. Now I want one and there's none to be found. Are you tired?

[Referring to the narcolepsy.]

[herotypical]

Very. [ she admits, shouldering her scythe. ] I guess now's the time I'm supposed to thank you for waking me up.

You're welcome. [He says it idly, still listening for other sounds. There's no need to thank when he was doing his--sigh--duty.]
