[He pushes aside a rather large leaf for her, as a gentleman would hold a door for a lady.]

[ well, that's all kind of sweet but cheesy but butterfly-inducing but scary but nice. trustworthy, though? she believes that jack believes it. but jack also believes the number eleven is unlucky. ]

[ as she is occasionally wont to do when smiling in moments of otherwise non-smilingness, buffy tilts her head away. looking up at a space above the both of them and away to the left.

this is the kind of sweetness she doesn't deserve. not after what she's put him through and not after her history of failures in the feelings department.

so she deflects with yet another diversion into someone else's relationship. first suki, now her sister: ] Did you know that Archie had a dress made for Dawn?

[That thought would have to remain unfinished as Jack plunges up to his chest into a quicksand pit.]

Apparently, there was ki--[ it's probably a good thing that they're walking so far apart. this allows buffy to miss out on that surprise -- although she certainly seems quite surprised over jack's sudden sinking. ]

...Stay still! I think. [ a moment of indecision. ] TV says you're not supposed to struggle. And I'll... [ find something to haul him out with. something longer than the scythe. ]

Kissing? There was kissing? Did he snog her, or did she snog him?

[Very slowly he was beginning to slip further in, even though Jack was trying to stay very, very still.]

Not the time for locker talk, Jack. [ what are you? ] And also, even if it was -- wh -- [ she breaks off that thought as she breaks off a decently sized branch and gets close to the ground as she extends the aid out to him. ]

Hold on. I'll drag you out. [ though the ground's pretty comfy, eh? ]

Haul away, Annie! [He has a firm grip on the branch.] I'll bet she snogged him. How much shall we wager?
