By the time morning hits Luceti, the Moon has begun to breach the barrier, noticeable by how the barrier will fluctuate about the Moon's face in strange ribbons of energy. The oceans and lakes begin to rage as they are caught by the Moon's gravity. The ground begins to quake in an unsettling way. Small and harmless tremors that will slowly intensify over the course of the day. With the Moon already partway through the barrier, it will be noticeable that it is not quite as large as the real Moon. Though quite vast, the Moon itself does is not quite the entire size of Luceti, but is large enough to span the entire village and more. The Moon's angered face does not cease for a moment, even as it becomes the only sight in the sky.

Yet it remains in the sky, slowly breaking through the barrier, and proving indestructible in spite of all that is thrown at it. In the evening it will begin to cause gravitational disturbances, drawing up debris and small objects into the air. When it finally reaches midnight, the bottom of the Moon will be one mile above Luceti. At that point, all will suddenly black out and know no more. What becomes of the Moon? Does Luceti go splat? Will CJ finally get his moon rocks? Stay tuned!

It took mere seconds for Buffy to appear through a doorway. Her hair was tied back with a pretty patterned little bandanna -- a style she had dabbled briefly with in her one year of college and which she fell back upon during some of the more strenuous moments in Luceti. Moments where she was too stressed and preoccupied for bobby pins or braids or barrettes.

"...Did you feel it?" The quake. "O-or, of course you felt it. Jeez. Talk about portentous."

"It might be like last time," he cautioned, heading directly for the slayer. Jack reached out to caress her cheek. "Hallo, Annie."

"...Let's hope not. Last time was--" A shrug. She met his hand on her cheek and placed three fingers against the back of his wrist. "I picked up some big empty jugs from the bar. I've been filling them with water. Just in case. That's what you're supposed to do, right? In a natural disaster kind of emergency? They say you've gotta have enough water for...what is it? Seventy-two hours?"

And he'd just brought the bear. Priorities were so different. After a moment, Jack dropped his hand.

"Aye. A store of fresh drinking water is always important, Annie. Is she alright?"

Buffy understood why Jack always asked. It still didn't stop her from feeling frustrated with the constant asking. Perhaps it was the frustration of the moment inspiring her but she wanted to jut out her chin and tell him that of course she was alright. That why on Earth would she be stuck filling jugs from the bathtub if Jilly wasn't alright?

But instead, she only nodded.

It was the answer he had expected and it was the answer he needed. Jack set the teddy bear down on a nearby chair and began to take off his coat.

"Not much food left in the store; being taken more quickly than it's being replenished, I'll wager. 'Salright." He slung his coat over the back of the chair. "There'll be more later. Or I'll get us some. Turkeys, eh?" It was a gentle sort of joke---something he had planned for her Day of Thanks feast.

Turkey monsters. There was an unfortunate recollection -- here, in this room. Over tea. Tea sweetened by the same wild honey he had first given her, actually. And she had still said those things about Jack to Giles. The things that had no doubt precipitated the later attack, during the Shift. Buffy swallowed that guilt and nodded for a second time.

"We've got...cans. Of stuff. Lots of cans. We'll deal." She watched his coat. Not him. "People are heading for the tunnels."

"Is that what you want, love?"

Jack wanted nothing to do with those tunnels. Going to ground had never served him well--horizons were what served him. Open air. Long distances to run. But if Buffy thought it best.....best for her? Best for Jilly?

"...God, no."

She shook her head. "Hiding here is hard enough." But last time -- the earthquake -- she had been high up in the ranks of those helping those who needed it into the tunnels. And today, suddenly, she was looking only after this small contingent. As wrong as that felt, Buffy found herself unable to step out and cast her helpful net any wider.

Every time she tried, she remembered the week of waiting for Jack to come back to life. It brought her immediately to second guess her plans.

"The ocean is now totally cut off," he informed her, moving on to other subjects. The house felt so quiet compared to the madness and bustle and preparation outside. "Cut off from us."

Suddenly the lack of McCoy felt all the more painful, as it hadn't since the immediate time after his departure. The pirate toyed with the bow on the bear's neck.

"I don't want to run. It'll scare her."

"...And the ships?"

The moon was bearing down upon them but Buffy's preparations were slanted towards a hurricane or a thunderstorm. She had candles out on the counter -- coloured and scented and decorative in prior life. Magical in another before that. Extra blankets were already brought out from the hall closet.

Silently, she seemed to agree with Jack. Running was more trouble than it was worth; however, Buffy's issue wasn't with not running away -- it was with not running towards the battle. As if one could actually battle a moon.

"You know what I think? I think--later-like---I'll be enjoying the sight of you in a beautiful pirate-y gown. That's what I think. And that all of this is for naught."

She watched the question war across his face and only tipped her head forward in the slightest, barest response to all that uncertainty. There was, she thought, the pennant. Perhaps the birthday gift would see the Joanna Joyce through the rising, roiling tides.

"Later-like," she echoed without confirmation or denial. "Then I guess you've made your choice." Halloween was tomorrow and she had insisted that there could only be one costume, after all.

"Guess I have." The leather dress could come later. WOULD. Would come later. He would see to it, somehow. But for now the thought of Buffy Summers in the beautiful dress of a pirate wench with the linen and leather and hat and a lovely bared throat and her bosoms all....

He hadn't thought about his own costume. He didn't care very much, when it came down to it.

"Has Jilly said what she wants to dress as?"

A casual question for tense times.

Casual questions in tense times were the kind of questions she preferred.

"I think she'd make a really cute monkey but I think she's got a mind of her own, costumes-wise." Buffy doubted that the next day would allow for any kind of fun, Halloween-related outings. She hadn't wanted to promise Jilly anything she couldn't deliver. So when the subject came up, she often tried to side-step it.

"A monkey?" Ugh. Not a monkey. "What about a tiny wee bunny?" He strode into the kitchen and opened the cupboards. Time to take some inventory.

[herotypical]

"Not all monkeys are evil. Or undead. Some are just...curious."

She followed only so far as the doorway, leaning against the frame.

Then Jack recalled the bunny hood. Maybe NOT a bunny. That had been plenty of trouble.

"We have a fair supply here, don't we. Plenty of peanut butter." He nodded in approval, drumming his fingers on the countertop.

"...So no protein deficiencies on the list of things to worry about." The flippant and unconcerned voice was out to play again. Anything else and she was certain she would break down from all this pressure. All these choices.

"The moon. Do you think it's an experiment or an accident?" Sometimes it was hard to tell the difference between which Shifts were intentional and which were actually counter to the Malnosso's plans. Somehow, she couldn't see the Organization wanting to satellite-strike their test subjects out of existence.

George is Mairead's FAVORITE THING EVER.

The drumming stopped.

"Neither. I think it's a mean-spirited trick, is what I think."

And victory would be preserving Jilly's innocence and helping her to feel safe and unafraid.

"...It's definitely not a treat," she mumbled. Then, louder: "Still -- a trick? Still counts as intentional. And if it's intentional then we're probably not in any real danger. Missions are supposed to start up in a few days. Right? Why exterminate your labour force?"

But Jack was thinking, now, of Horatio Hornblower and all of his plans. This timing was very convenient, now wasn't it? Hornblower plotting and whispering rebellion against their captors---or were they allies?---and trying to win co-conspirators to his side. And now this.

"Maybe not exterminate...but frighten? Injure? Maim? That would serve them well enough, I imagine."

He didn't respond to that topic of missions quite yet. Jack had been mulling that over ever since the announcement.
