Where: Out on the beach, centered around the teleporter/tunnel exit area. But it feels like July out there! Ain't that just the shit?

Long Ago In A Distant Land, Akai, the fully functional fonbot, unleashed a fairly standard mod post. But a foolish player kept asking questions and come on, do you really need to know that much? Now everyone wants to play out their ships and get into fruit shenanigans and undo to evil that is AKAI.

OH YEAH! So like, assume there is stands (or you know, beach-appropriate huts) here and there that are stocked up on bathing suits (and curtains you can change behind), stands with beverages, and snacks. Nobody's really operating them, new stuff just gets Shifted there (BUT ONLY IF YOU'RE NOT WATCHING). The Malnosso are the most considerate bro-ginization ever.

His plan had been to take a long nap, and chances are he still will (although he will make it to Cloud Nine that night, regardless). But between hearing about warm weather at the beach, knowing what part of the year it is, and...yeah, dammit, something is pushing him to go anyway, he will show up in the afternoon to take a look around.

He's in jeans and a t-shirt, although he does have swim trunks on underneath. He'll definitely check on the ship for a few minutes before making his way to the water side to watch the waves for a bit. He will also do his very best to stay away from those trees.

His very best.

Which means he's going to spend a lot of time staring out over the water, or swimming and surfing in it.

Buffy approached Derek during one of his surfing breaks.

"You make it look...so easy."

Derek will glance up and smile at Buffy. He's been worried that she's one of the ones affected, but he also knows that if she is, there's not much to be done about it. At least not until after it's over.

"Yeah, well. Get smacked in the head by the board enough times, you learn not to fall off." The following grin is easy going and he'll pat the sand next to him.

"How's it been the past week?"

She arranged the skirt of her sun-dress and settled on the beach next to Derek.

"Not so bad. Kinda okay, actually. And yours?"

"Kicked some ass, took some names."

By now, it should be obvious his right forearm is bandaged up and wrapped in something waterproof. There's also the occasional bruise and scratch--physical proof of his words and claim to action.

"Glad to be back, really."

[herotypical]

"Careful," she intoned quietly. "You'll make me actually hopeful that you got any names at all. Besides -- you can't be half as glad as I am to see you in one piece."

"Names weren't much use anyway; they were things like 'Grrwarw' and 'snarl snap eat your face'."

Yeah, trying to talk to Shift beasts was an exercise in futility.

He'll smile a little at her last comment. It's almost like having family greet you. Almost.

"Well, I do tend to have a bad penny kind of luck, you know?" He'll look away though. "Just glad you guys seem to be all right here."

Except, of course, for whatever the experiment may or may not be doing to his friends' heads right now.

"Jack's been acting...odd. And romance has been in the air. But there hasn't been much else of note. Or if there was? I've been too busy to notice."

"Odd? How so?"

Oh man, don't tell him this. Buffy and Jack have enough trouble keeping it straight as it is, from what Derek can tell. Still, he'll ask anyway. It's like a high speed train wreck, really. You don't even have the chance to figure out you can't look away even if you want to.

"What's he been doing?"

[herotypical]

"Losing touch with reality. Again. I worry about him, that's all."

Very forthcoming; she seemed to think this had nothing to do with her.

"And what reality is this?"

Yeah, he can see that. Just like he can see the sort of brush off Buffy is giving the pirate with her words and lack of interest in the pirate's suppositions.

Like they'd never gotten anywhere near as far as they did.

Ah, hell.

"He thinks him and me were...y'know, more than the friends we are."

"And you're not," Derek says it quietly, but Buffy may or may not recognize that cautious undertone by now that indicates he may have a different take on the situation.

"A-affirmative."

That sound in his voice; she frowned. "How could we be?"

"...guess that would depend on who you think is suffering from the event."

He's still couching his words carefully; giving her enough tone to let her work it out on her own if she wanted to, but not trying to force her to see it.

Because they both know form bitter experience how well that works.

"Him. He is.

Isn't he?"

Derek just offers a light, somewhat tight lipped smile as an answer.

"So how's the surfing going?"

[herotypical]

"...Haven't been able to find a board short enough for little old me. Apparently that makes a difference?"

[rather_be_surfing]

"Yeah. It's that whole weight and balance thing."
