Long Ago In A Distant Land, Akai, the fully functional fonbot, unleashed a fairly standard mod post. But a foolish player kept asking questions and come on, do you really need to know that much? Now everyone wants to play out their ships and get into fruit shenanigans and undo to evil that is AKAI.

OH YEAH! So like, assume there is stands (or you know, beach-appropriate huts) here and there that are stocked up on bathing suits (and curtains you can change behind), stands with beverages, and snacks. Nobody's really operating them, new stuff just gets Shifted there (BUT ONLY IF YOU'RE NOT WATCHING). The Malnosso are the most considerate bro-ginization ever.

[He can tell something is wrong. Everything from months prior bubbles closer to the surface. Here he is, relying so much on a boy who just happens to be a human, when he had backed out on her for the same reason. He's aware of that, it's just..... He really can't explain it. How Jeb makes him feel, or why.]

It's been a few months. Two.

[So about as long as they had been apart... Did that mean she had been replaced, even by Mithos?

No, don't think that, she can't delve further into despair but dear gods it hurt... Everywhere it felt like she was being replaced for someone better, someone who could be more than she could ever hope to, and she didn't know what to do about it... Please, for once, don't let the tears show.]

... What's he like...?

Jeb? He's very gentle and kind...and patient.

He's been hurt a lot before, for things that weren't his fault, so he understands, in a way. [but in other ways...] Even if he still believes in the world, he doesn't condemn me for thinking the way I do. [even if Mithos sometimes gets angry or upset about Jeb's persistent hope, the other boy stays by his side. He doesn't lash out or blame or accuse...]

[... What could she say about him having someone who made him feel that way? Tell him not to? If he made Mithos happy, more than she could, then...

It's best to let go and fade away again, isn't it? Like all those other times she has. Not to mention he sounded like two particular other people she knew.] ... He kind of sounds like Freyjadour.

[...That name still doesn't go down easily. He doesn't care how hypocritical it is; he doesn't like Frey, and he doesn't like how much Kaori seems to care about him. It leaves him anxious, like being on the brink of a disaster waiting to unfold.

And there's the small part of him, locked away and tapping faintly at the door, that wants to believe his kindness is genuine.

He swallows a dozen biting insults he could thrust toward Frey - he doesn't want to upset her by starting an argument. He doesn't want a repeat from a few months ago, when they're finally spending time together again. But one question refuses to be held back.]

...Do you really think he understands anything? [He's trying so hard to keep his tone neutral.]

Not at all! [And she says it with absolute certainty, despite the smile that is somehow making its way to her face as she thinks about it and tries to assess the emotions coming off of Mithos. Of course he would be confused, just as she had been when that woman came to pick him up from the house all those weeks ago. Surely he would have some choice words to say about him, just as she did then... and if this had happened before Frey returned home all those months ago, she would not have tried to stop him from throwing Freyjadour into that sharp category of just being another Human, maybe even joining Mithos in degrading him.

But things were different now... She knew better, at least when it came to her brother, and for all the sadness she had felt lately a part of her would not allow her to soon forget that he had at one time called her his 'sister.']

But... he doesn't even pretend to understand. I think that's part of what matters most about it. I know he doesn't like it, but he doesn't pretend to know what I'm feeling or tell me how to.

[He frowns. His mind rebels against her words, throwing up resistance to anything positive that can be said about Frey. Amidst the friction, there's a part of him that quietly admits that she might be a better judge of his character, because isn't he in the same inexplicable circumstances with Sayo? A much larger part refuses to concede anything, because he just doesn't trust Frey. Because she could be very wrong about him, and she could get hurt.

He manages to hold it inside, knowing that letting it all slip will get them nowhere. He just doesn't want to break this moment with Kaori.]

...That's how she is, too. Sayo... [there's a certain awkwardness attached with saying her name. In all the time he had spent with her, he had never once called her by it. Now, just like then, he's tied down with remembering that aside from the many insults he's thrown at her in the past, the only name he's ever given her is 'mom'.]

[She can't stop herself from tensing when he says that Jeb is the same way – he was, after all, still a faceless name to her, even more so than others she had met in the village. There had been no mention of him before, nothing to attach to that name other than what Mithos told her... And though she trusted Mithos to not lie to her, she has to wonder just why, and how he came to be so close to someone without her notice. It was almost as though she had failed to protect him.

But when he mentions Sayo, the quiet anger that was directed at Jeb seemed to bubble away in favour of vague confusion. There was more to the woman he had just mentioned than his words seemed to be implying, and though she hasn't fully connected everything together, she could haphazard a few guesses.] ... Is she the one who came for you that day?

...Yes, that was her. [how does he even begin to explain her to Kaori when he can barely explain it to himself?] I lived with her for a little while. When I returned to the village with...my leg the way it is, she gave me somewhere to stay, where I would be safe. Even though she's human, she didn't care that I wasn't... She helped me up off the ground anyway.

[It's not the beginning, it's not the ending, it's not the whole complicated story, but it gets at the heart of who she is. In the corner of his eye, he can see the parallels to Freyajour, even if he doesn't want to admit they're there. It just knots everything further.]

[Kaori herself can see the parallels to Freyjadour without even having to put in the effort, though she wasn't sure whether or not to take comfort in this. So Mithos had someone like that also... should it really be that surprising, though? There had to have been someone to take care of him that whole time they had not spoken.

That didn't help the small sense of hurt involved, but at the same time there was some relief that if something should ever happen to her...] What do you want me to think about her?

[...What a strange question to ask. But at the same time, it only makes sense.] I don't know. I don't even know what to think about her.

[He looks down at the sand.] She's not like other humans. She told me that no matter what anyone else said or thought, she would make sure I have a place here. She said she would always welcome me. ...I think I can believe her. [his voice gets softer, a whisper from a past that was never fully buried underneath the muck and grime.] I want to believe her...

[Was it wrong of her to smile when he says that? She hasn't met this woman in person, where she would have a far better assessment of her character. And if she were allowed to be honest with him, she still could not trust her with her friend. But what other choice did she have? Only to do exactly as Seirou had asked of her all those years ago.]

It's... scary to want to believe, isn't it? But... what else can we do, while we're here? Even if it's just her for you...

[He doesn't have to like Frey, if it made things easier for all of them. But she can't take away a source of comfort for him so willingly.]

It is. I'm still afraid... Trusting someone means that you can get hurt. [His words echo back to months ago, when he had closed himself to her for the same reason. Somehow, after all that silence, it doesn't feel strange at all to talk about this with her.]

But sometimes, if I don't over-think it, I actually feel like I belong when I'm with her. That's how I feel around my sister, or Jeb...and you make me feel that way too. Like I have somewhere I belong, even if it isn't a permanent place like a home.

... Why couldn't our worlds be more like this place, Mithos? [She doesn't like the idea that he has found other people beyond her here, but she can't put a stop to it. She would not contribute to the loneliness Mithos felt that she so often did even here. Yet here was... somehow better than when she was at home, with her current family. While a part of her would forever be grateful that the purebloods had no issue with accepting mixed bloods among them, it was never the same.]

If it were, you... [He wouldn't have to be dead. She can't stop herself from clinging to him more tightly when she remembers that her best friend would have nowhere else but here. It wasn't fair.]

[He hesitates over her declaration that this world is different from his or hers or any other. His mind still insists on the rules he learned a long time ago and saw reiterated for thousands of years, and even if there are one or two exceptions...]

...I've wondered too often what my life might have been like if someone had been there for me after my sister died. If someone had bothered to reach out to me... [It hurts to think about all the maybes. Maybe he would have learned to be okay. Maybe he would have made it through instead of suffocating underneath despair.]

... How long did you have to be alone? [He said that he had had companions at one point before, didn't he? What kind of companions were those if they couldn't even offer support for him when he needed it most?

She knows she could be so much worse off now if there hadn't been anyone there to keep her standing on the continuously eroding ground, the darkness she woke up to every day was a constant reminder. It wasn't always someone she necessarily liked, but it was better than nothing.]

For many, many years. A long time passed... [He wonders if she hasn't already realized that he might be a lot older than his physical form suggests. He can't say why he hesitates to specify the number of years, when she has already accepted everything else about him, but...]

Kratos and Yuan were there, but they both felt so distant. ...I was foolish to continue to think of them as my friends, when they couldn't even do anything to help me.

[There had been instances where she had wondered his true age – while she knew what he looked like thanks to her time as a child in the village, that physical appearance that she had seen did not match up with the seemingly older, much older age of the soul within it. But it didn't really matter enough to ask for her, because it wasn't their age tying them together. It was their experiences.

And if this Kratos and Yuan had been around when Mithos had been hurting so much, she couldn't help but think that they just didn't care. But here he wouldn't have to deal with that cruelty, she would see to it.]

... I can try to help you now. I know it'll always hurt no matter what, but I'm here, Mithos. No matter when that pain happened, I'll share it with you.

...Thank you... [It's...all he can manage. It just seems appropriate. For the hundredth time this afternoon he realizes just how much he missed her, which is followed by the hundredth time he has to ask himself why he ever thought it was a good idea to cut her out of his life.]

I really mean that...thank you.

[There are no words waiting in reply when she hears him say that, only a smile that somehow manages to break through for him. Knowing that despite everything, they still cared for each other enough... It would work to sustain her for the time being as once again she holds herself more closely to him, closing her eyes and resting her head on his shoulder gently.

It wouldn't last forever, but for now this was enough.]
