There was something simply awkward about sitting in silence while a loved one ground their mental gears just to find an ounce of healing magic. Buffy wondered if it was equally weird to, say, date a dentist and then sit there uncomfortably while he poked around your molars.

Eventually, she had to interrupt: "Steady, now. Before you give yourself an aneurysm."

And then Buffy groaned at her own joke -- there were years, now, between her and her mother's death and it wouldn't have been in such bad taste except...except Joyce had seemed so very real in that dream.

"Right!" Jack sputtered and opened his eyes, peering at her for any signs of improvement. Hoping.

[herotypical]

And now he was staring at her. All this concern and worry and fretting was alarming. Doubly so since it seemed justified. Buffy -- who couldn't feel a measurable improvement even if there was one -- allowed the silence to linger a little longer before filling the gap with anything: "Th-thanks."

"Welcome," he said shyly in return, warmed a bit by the fact that it had helped some. "I could bring you something nice to eat if you like?"

He hadn't eaten since before the dream shifter; Jack just figured she was as hungry as he was.

[herotypical]

She thought about food, and...

"I don't think I could keep anything down."

[all7seas]

"Maybe later, then." And the pirate moved from the bed and tried to get comfortable in the chair once more. "Don't want to get ill over it, eh?"

[herotypical]

Something made her wince. She touched her forehead. But soon the moment passed and she was watching him again.

"Maybe later. As long as it's not hospital food. Kinda...tired of that."

[all7seas]

"I'll find you somethin' different. Something more better and deliciouser! Don't worry." The cheerful tone masked a lot of concern, but the pirate knew Buffy Summers very well, and knew above all that she didn't like a lot of fuss over her.

He could fuss in private, later.

[herotypical]

"Something like Jello," she hinted. For later. The prospect of him coming back with some fine, gourmet meal that she'd be unable to chew let alone swallow? Awful. She could already imagine the look on his face and the gravelled I'm a lummox, should that happen.

[all7seas]

"Strawberry Jello."

Jack reached for her hand -- just a light touch.

[herotypical]

This time? She didn't retreat.

"Did you know that if you make it with soda, it stays all bubbly?"

[all7seas]

"Mmmm. I'll try to find the bubbly kind, then." Grateful for her not-running, the pirate leaned toward her. "And ice cream?"

[herotypical]

"Maybe we can work our way up to ice-cream with a nice, long pit stop somewhere around the soup."

[all7seas]

"Soup. I'm a lummox; should've thought of that first. I've an entire verse about how McCoy serves the wenches soup."

[herotypical]

"Wh-what?"

She felt as though she should understand what he was telling her. Something about a ballad, right? "It's -- don't worry about it."

[all7seas]

"Wish he was here to do for you now." Sparrow leaned forward and kissed her fingers. "Out here in space. I don't like it as much as I thought I would."

[herotypical]

She, too, missed Bones. His atrocious bedside manner would be a comfort right now. His steady hand and his grumble. Telling her she'd be fine reassuringly criticizing her freakish ability to have withstood this much violence already.

"It's...discombobulating. I'm not a fan."

[all7seas]

"Soon enough, eh? Soon enough I'll have you home. With me."

[herotypical]

"The sooner we get home? The longer I'll take to heal. On my own, I mean. I'm at a hundred percent out here. Remember?"

And so this whole disaster could easily have been much, much worse.

[all7seas]

It wasn't lost on the pirate. "One hundred. Aye." He slumped back in the chair. "Heal fast, eh?"

Maybe he could try more Nala-healing later.

[herotypical]

"And I need, uhm...not now but later. When I figure out what I should even say to him...

Later, I'll need Albert."

[all7seas]

".......Why?"

Hell. Buffy's mouth had moved too fast for her mind. And now, she couldn't quite recall if she'd ever given any indication that she had been working on this effort with the strategist. Collaborating.

"I trust him about as far as I could thrust a blade into his gut," came the even reply. "So...eight inches.
