Buffy Summers asked Jack Sparrow to meet her at the battle dome. It was a plan that had been discussed before the pirate had disappeared and now that he was back? Well -- she cared very little for dawdling. They had dawdled before but now was the time for seizing. She had yet to overcome the horror of waking up alone for yet another morning when she had expected to be the furthest thing from it.

People change. And Buffy mused quietly upon the changes to be found in Jack as she waited just outside the dome's entrance. She had a bag-o-weapons at her feet and a plastic bottle filled with some sort of over-sugared juice in her hand.

"License? Does Jack Sparrow ever gain license to do anything? No, I say! He simply does what he will." With a flick of his fingers, the non-existent car door opened, and the existing pirate slid into the driver's seat. He thwacked the pine tree air freshener and turned all the buttons on the dash and opened the glove box. A key tumbled out.

"Oh! Key."

"...Nuh-uh. No way. I am not getting in that passenger seat."

Buffy leaned down by the driver side window, peering in at the pirate.

"Buffy! I've just had a thought. You could get into the passenger seat!"

[herotypical]

"...Driving a car is gonna be nothing like sailing a ship. Do you even know the first thing about the rules of the road?"

Still not moving.

[all7seas]

"All I know of them is that they're all meant to be broken." Remembering how Kennedy had started the Mighty War Tractor, Jack found the ignition with the key and turned it. The radio immediately began blasting some epic driving tunes. Sparrow flicked the mirror lights on and off.

"Annie? Quite cozy in here. Much more better were you in here with me, love."

She slumped against the driver's side door -- bowing her head and gripping the edge that she knew contained the wound-down window.

"Once around the block. That's it. Okay?"

"AYE! Around the block, you and me! We'll be going right round the block together, in this, our car! Now get in." He reached over and swung the passenger door open.

She intended to be strict with the interpretation of block. But Buffy walked around the front of the car with an admirable air of defiance despite giving in and when she dropped into the passenger side, it was with all the familiarity and practice of someone who had stepped her way into a car numerous times over her life.

"...Don't kill us. Don't even simulatedly kill us."

"We are far more precious to me alive than dead, sweet slayer. Now. Hold on. Erm. Right."

He stared at the shift. At least it was an automatic.

"What now?"

[herotypical]

"This is the part where I tell you that I've never passed a driving test. Jack? We gotta back out of this side-street, first."

She reached to her left and nudged the shift into reverse.

Jack leaned one arm over the back of the seat so he could see behind him. The car rolled backward at idling speed. "Horridly SLOW, this car. I thought it would be more fun than this."

[herotypical]

"...Nothing wrong with starting off nice and slow."

[all7seas]

Jack accidentally hit the break, causing them to jolt to a stop. "Waaaaait a tick, here..."

That pedal was the stop? The one beside it must be...


The pirate began to laugh softly. He leaned over to kiss Buffy on the cheek. Then, arm flung over the back of the seat, Jack stepped on the gas and floored it backward.

It was her lightening-quick reflexes and serious sense of self preservation that helped Buffy latch onto the dash ahead of her and steady herself. "Jack!" She shouted the word almost like a curse and found herself thrown back against the seat.

Buffy hadn't even managed to put her seatbelt on, yet. And so was even less amused.

"That's it -- stop. I'm revoking your driving rights."

"But it goes backward so beautifully, love! Why didn't you tell me cars could do this?"

Jack turned up the radio and contented himself with driving FAR TOO FAST backwards. The wheel was so responsive to his touch---not at all like steering a ship. He swung it about once they were in the boulevard, spinning circles.

"Oi! It enjoys going fast, doesn't it!"

"Probably because I've only ever driven a car once? And I wasn't really doing it for the fun."

She held on tight and cursed her fondness for the man. She shouldn't have given in. Or she should've allowed him his death-trap joyride all on his lonesome.

He slammed on the brakes again. "How, Annie...how do we make it go forwards?"

[herotypical]

"We don't. We don't make it go forwards. We get out and we don't let you near anything with an engine ever again. I think we left my heart somewhere back there in the alley -- y'know, after it leapt out of my throat and then hobbled off in fright."

[all7seas]

"But I like this car. And later, we can snog in that large and accommodating rear seat, Annie."

[herotypical]

"I can't believe this. You haven't even been here for a half hour and you're trying to talk me into the back seat. That is so...so--" Buffy struggled for the appropriate words, mangling the air in front of her with gesturing fingers.

"Typical. Of you."

"Typical? I've never even driven about in a car before, Buffy. Let us keep the facts on the table, as the saying goes."

He tapped his thumb and forefinger against the steering wheel, then reached down and yanked on a lever by the wheel. The car's headlights turned on, illuminating the street in front of them.

The now empty street.

"Night's falling."

"And the fact still remains on the table that you -- you --" she jabbed a finger in his direction. "You're just the kind of guy whose first thought is how fast can this go and the second is will she make out in the back seat."

Buffy leaned her elbow on the inside of the door and stared out at the pavement ahead. Frustratingly, the simulation did not allow for her to feel the comforting tingle of vamp-proximity in the base of her spine and so she had no idea what the state of the immediate area is.

"...Come on. We can play NASCAR later. I wanna make sure we're safe, first. Preempt any and all date interruptions."

She opened the passenger door.

He looked regretfully at the back seat. "Perhaps later, then...?" But didn't continue the thought. Dark meant vampires---even a not-very-vampire-knowledgeable pirate knew that. Jack shut off the engine but left the lights on and the key in the ignition. He gave the pine scented air freshener one last appreciative sniff before climbing out of the car.

"Oi! Vampires! Come and eat me, you bastards! Right here! Fresh blood!"

The scythe glimmered in the head lamps. She held it firmly and felt the sweet build-up of pre-fight adrenaline. She knew that Jack dreaded the thirsty undead's cameo but Buffy would be forever lying if she tried to suggest that she wasn't just itching for someth ing a little more along these lines. And so Jack's call to war made her laugh -- good naturedly.

"Being the bait doesn't suit you, hon. But the attempt is appreciated."

There was a low growl from the far left. Bingo. Perhaps Jack's yelling had, indeed, done the trick.

"Now. Defend me, slayer. Rescue me." And the pirate lay back on the hood of the car, arms folded behind his head---relaxed and clearly not fussed. At least on the outside.
