There will be a thread for interacting with NPCs, but they may not all go up at once, so keep an eye out for them.

"Infirmary, darling. You're....you got......the General. And all." He cleared his throat. "You're safe. I'm here."

"I didn't get him," she misunderstood his pauses -- perhaps wilfully. Buffy would welcome the guilt. It was a more familiar pain than the physical kind.

[all7seas]

"I know, love.




Did he take it?"

[herotypical]

She didn't answer. Not that question. Instead, she asked another of her own: "Is he still out there?"

"I don't know. I haven't left you. I haven't asked." Part of him didn't care. She was alive; that was enough.

"Buffy? I'm sorry."

The apology was meant to cover the shooting of her father; to Jack it felt flimsy and inadequate.

Her laughter was angry. Bitter.

"You're sorry?"

"Aye. For what I had to do." He still could not get her agonized scream out of his head. "So sorry."

[herotypical]

He was smarter than her -- the first time around, at least. The first time, she'd believed the dream entirely. Buffy's brows knit and she blinked rather furiously. Looking anywhere but at him. If the doctor had eventually asked her to get rid of the Jack-shaped delusion, would she have done it? Like she tried to do to her sister and her friends, once?

"You took out the enemy." And then, less reasonably: "That's more than I managed to do."

"That's not reasonable, woman!" Jack called her on it. "Oi. Look at me. NOT reasonable."

[herotypical]

The woman who used to be the Lucetian who'd brought down the General slowly swung her head back in his direction.

"You barely even hesitated," she said with admiration -- albeit cool and distant admiration.

[all7seas]

"She was killing you."

[herotypical]

Another nod.

"She was." Not that she had far to go. "Looks like you managed to save the day, anyway. Good job. Captain."

[all7seas]

He'd never expected her to resent THAT of all things. His heart sank under the weight of disapproval. "Why don't you sleep more. Rest. Or I can try more Nala magic on you..."

[herotypical]

What looked like resentment on the surface was just a lot of poorly communicated disappointment in herself.

"More? So, you already..."

[all7seas]

"Not sure it helped," he said gruffly.

[herotypical]

"Every little bit does. Probably."

The wry waver in that last word spoke to something more familiarly Buffy Summers. A bit of haze was clearing -- not much, but enough. She still felt like several days worth of roadkill, though. And was only now becoming aware of bandages and gauze. Actual stitches.

"More, then." He closed his eyes and concentrated.

[all7seas]

...Hard. Concentrated very, very hard.

[herotypical]

There was something simply awkward about sitting in silence while a loved one ground their mental gears just to find an ounce of healing magic. Buffy wondered if it was equally weird to, say, date a dentist and then sit there uncomfortably while he poked around your molars.

Eventually, she had to interrupt: "Steady, now. Before you give yourself an aneurysm."

And then Buffy groaned at her own joke -- there were years, now, between her and her mother's death and it wouldn't have been in such bad taste except...except Joyce had seemed so very real in that dream.

"Right!" Jack sputtered and opened his eyes, peering at her for any signs of improvement. Hoping.

[herotypical]

And now he was staring at her. All this concern and worry and fretting was alarming. Doubly so since it seemed justified. Buffy -- who couldn't feel a measurable improvement even if there was one -- allowed the silence to linger a little longer before filling the gap with anything: "Th-thanks."

"Welcome," he said shyly in return, warmed a bit by the fact that it had helped some. "I could bring you something nice to eat if you like?"

He hadn't eaten since before the dream shifter; Jack just figured she was as hungry as he was.

[herotypical]

She thought about food, and...

"I don't think I could keep anything down."

[all7seas]

"Maybe later, then." And the pirate moved from the bed and tried to get comfortable in the chair once more. "Don't want to get ill over it, eh?"

[herotypical]

Something made her wince. She touched her forehead. But soon the moment passed and she was watching him again.

"Maybe later. As long as it's not hospital food. Kinda...tired of that."
