Summary: The next experiment begins, Naoki takes a turn for the ~~crazy~~ worst—there are too many humans here, after all, and obviously this needs to be fixed. Meanwhile, Isamu shoulders the role of ‘demi-fiend’.
Rating: PG-13

I cast away my humanity... [He studies his hand.] So I could be a demon. They told me I needed to destroy my friends in order to prove myself? [He closes his hand into a fist.] I did.

[He sighs.] It was an endless cycle of creation we were caught in...and humans ruined everything back home, so why not make it a demon's world? [It's not like that. It was only one person who, and he-- I didn't--that's wrong! I didn't!]

You... [Ted just... stands there, confused, mostly because she wasn't sure if this was just a way to throw her off guard or not. Admittedly, it was a good time to do that, but... something seemed off.] What are you saying?

I'm just a demon. [Naoki tilts his head, hitches a shoulder in a shrug.] Everything I've done here was to make people think otherwise. After all... [He waves a hand listlessly.] Demons can't have friends.

You... Do you really mean that? [She's dubious, staring at him warily at that. He wasn't serious, was he?]

Of course. [But his voice is hollow, and he's looking away because that feels wrong to say.]

[...]

Then look me in the eyes when you say it.

[Naoki's eyes switch to hers.] I'm a dem-- [Not. I'm not. It's the one thing he's always told himself, over and over. Without realising it, he slides a foot to take a step back from Ted, grimacing.]

Naoki... [She makes a grab for his arm, trying to keep him in place.]

[Naoki flinches and his eyes flicker yellow. He lifts a hand to grip at her arm, a frantic edge to his voice.] Ted--Ted, I can't--I'm remembering things that--they're not right. I...

[Wince. Ow.] I know that. [Did she? She was certain he wasn't saying what he really felt, at least. Right now though, he's making more sense than before, so Naoki must be regaining his sense somehow.] I know that! That's why I'm here to help.

It's not safe, Ted, this isn't the right me-- [And then it's slipping away, those yellow eyes fading back into red. His grip loosens slightly and he draws back.]

[Damn, damn, damn] You idiot, don't just fall back into that mode whenever you want!

[Naoki's taking a step back from her now.] I gave that up...humanity.

[Damn it.] You cheeky punk. I can see your humanity clear as day, so don't delude yourself.

[Pause. Naoki's next step back is unsteady.] ...T-Ted.

[Taking a step forward.] I told you, didn't I? I'm your friend.

I'd be damned if I let you go on like this. [Experiment or not.]

[Naoki stares uncertainly at her--his eyes flicker rapidly between red and yellow.]

I-it's not safe for you, I don't know if I can control myself...

Do you think I care about that?! [On a regular basis, he'd grab his shoulders, but somehow right now with her height, she can only manage with his arms.] This isn't like you at all.

I care! I don't want you getting hurt! [He closes his hands around her wrists in return.] It's not the right me--there are two, I just don't know...

I think I already signed up for that when I let people enter my life. [She's not fragile, and she won't let you push her away so easily.]

Then we just have to focus on the 'you' right now, right? This is the Naoki I know... right?

[His fingers loosen on her wrist and his hands fall down to his sides as he looks at her helplessly.]

R-right. But I...don't know how long I can keep in control like this.

I'll keep it longer for you. You're not a demon, you and I both know that.

Y-yeah, I'm not. But that-that other me, he did, gave up, became a demon. [He presses his hands to his head, eyes squeezed shut.] Remembering...too many things.

But that's not you. You were the one who wanted to save everyone. You had to fight so much for it. [This isn't fair.]

[An unsteady nod.] But--most of the things we...did...aren't so different. I...there was a place I didn't go that...'he' did.
