[Katara shook her head.]

I'd rather not talk about that.

[Light exhale] Alright, that's fine too. Then just tell me what you do want to talk about. I'll just listen, and I won't interrupt you. I won't tell anyone. Promise.

I appreciate that.

[...but I'm not sure there's anything else I want to talk about.]

[Haruhi just sits here though. Not expectant, really, just watching Katara with genuinely concerned eyes. Katara's a proud girl. She wouldn't have come in if she wasn't genuinely hurting. She considers offering to make tea. She will if there isn't more said in a moment]

...have these experiments ever made you confess to someone?

No - nevermind. That's a dumb question. I mean, it happens almost every February, right? Nevermind.

[godbent]

It's not a dumb question.

[Quietly, directly. She nods as a subtle answer, mostly because she doesn't trust herself to give the real answer. About Minato and Keiichi.]

[Katara's shoulders slump a little bit, and she ducks her head.]

...what about to someone who... already liked you that way?

[...Keiichi...

She nods.]

...no way not to hurt them in the aftermath, is there.

[godbent]

[She averts her eyes a moment before looking back at Katara. Mostly because she's holding back what she thinks. Even if it ended up hurting - nearly killing - a dear friend of hers. Maybe it was a bad idea. She wants to see if Katara will go on without her really confirming it with words]

...I was one of those 'errors,' you know.

...Oh.

[That. Sucks. She's trying hard to keep to her not interrupting thing hoping Katara will eventually hit some floodgate, but she does frown with growing sympathy]

...so I went to see him thinking that everything was okay.

[..."I'm sorry?" No, that's lame. She finished her cookie. Maybe she should- Offer tea? No. Reach out for her hand. No. She just leans forward in her chair a bit, clearly engaged]

[She looks back up at Haruhi.]

It wasn't okay.

Of course it wasn't. If he wasn't errored... well. That had to hurt.

[AND THEN WE TALKED ABOUT A THREAD WE HAVEN'T THREADED YET-- I mean, what.]

...well, it didn't feel good.

[No, it was. One of the most horrible things ever, actually. And that's pretty high up there, for Katara. But she shakes her head. That wasn't really 'her' - she had the memories of her alternate's pain, but it wasn't 'her' pain.]

But he had to see me still being in love with him when he knows that I'm... not, really. And that it wasn't really him. And we'd [her voice lowers] shared a fruit in February.

[Haruhi is so. So. so. Sorely tempted to reject that and talk about Katara's own pain because she cares about that way, way more than she does some random guy. But... she nods, slowly, trying to keep a sympathetic (which to be fair isn't that hard) look on her face]

So... that happened. And then he went off for a little bit. And now I just... need to figure out what to do. Before he gets back.

Huh... [She considers, her lips now folding up into a duck pout] ...So what are you feeling about all this?

[What are you feeling...

What am I feeling?

There are a half a dozen things that she knows she should say.

And one of the reasons why she gave into this impulse was so... if someone asked her that... she wouldn't have to.]

Like I just want it all to stop.

[Her eyes fill up with tears.]

Like there's nothing I can do that's right.

...I understand wanting it to stop. [She sort of understands the second part too. But oh man, the girl's crying. Haruhi lowers her gaze just a bit out of respect and looks around the room. Ah, there is was. She stands from her chair to go collect the tissue box from the desk and set it on the little table between them]

[Katara takes a tissue and wipes at her eyes.

She hates this, but what good does that do?

...and I think I'm a little messed up too. I don't know if it's just - all the time we spent together, or if I just... feel really bad for him, but... it's not the same anymore. It's not as clear.
